Brazil registers over 2 mln biofuel cars in 2007, 85.6 pct of cars sold

Brazil registered 2.0 mln biofuel cars in 2007, representing 85.6 pct of the cars sold on the Brazilian market last year, the Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Anfavea) said.

Brazil now has a total of 4.6 mln biofuel cars, which run on either petrol or on ethanol made from sugarcane, Anfavea said. These cars were launched on the local market in 2003.
Anfavea said the number of biofuel cars sold in Brazil has soared from 48,000 in 2003 or 4 pct of new registrations, to 2.3 mln in 2007, or 85.6 pct of the total number of newly registered cars.

By 2013, half of Brazilian cars will be biofuel, Anfavea said, quadrupling the current number. The figure was 12 pct of the total last March.
