NEW YORK (Reuters) – Oil major BP Plc has told the U.S. government it will begin early oil production from its giant Thunder Horse field in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico on June 14, a spokeswoman for a U.S. regulator said Tuesday.
The long-delayed field, 150 miles southwest of New Orleans, will produce a maximum of 250,000 barrels per day of oil and 200 million cubic feet per day of natural gas when it reaches peak production.
Thunder Horse “is scheduled to start up on June 14,” said Caryl Fagot, a spokeswoman of the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS).
“The company does have to notify us within five days in writing when it does come on production.”
Thunder Horse will be the largest single oil producing facility in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico when it begins operations.
