BP Shuts Down 12 Leaking Alaska Oil Wells

(Reuters) – British oil giant BP PLC has shut down 12 producing wells at its Alaskan operations after BP workers told the Financial Times that about 50 wells had leaked a crude oil or diesel fuel-based insulating agent, a BP Alaska spokesman said on Tuesday.

“Fifty-seven wells out of a total of 2,200 have exhibited at some time that they have had these Arctic Pack leaks,” BP Alaska spokesman Daren Beaudo told Reuters.

Of the 57 wells, only 12 were currently in production and these have been shut down as a precautionary measure while BP investigates the allegations, he said.
