China may become a net corn importer in a few years partly as a result of robust demand from ethanol production. While it’s still unclear when the shift will happen, some analysts already see signs of farmers reacting to the growing demand by shifting to corn and away from other crops like soybeans.
“Corn stocks have fallen this year as a result of domestic demand,” an official from the Ministry of Commerce, who asked to remain anonymous, recently told state owned Xinhua, “We believe that China will become a net importer of corn in a few years.”
