For Walter Sims, every day is Bike to Work Day.
Fueled by concerns about the world’s dwindling oil reserves and rising temperatures, the 40-year-old computer engineer decided more than a year ago to become a two-wheeled commuter. Every day, he bikes an hour each way from his home in Redondo Beach to his job in Gardena.
“The way I look at it,” he said in an interview Monday at a Starbucks along his route, “I’ve grown concerned enough that this is important, and I can either talk about it or I can do something.”
After a few months of biking to work, he stopped driving altogether. The last time he tried to start his car, in December, the battery had died.
Getting it replaced, he says, is a “low priority.”
Bike to Work Day is Thursday, and for many corporations, it’s a good way to promote healthy living and build company spirit.
