Although there is a great deal of talk about the US addiction to oil, especially when gas prices go up, there is a vacuum of action, especially in light of the serious present and potential consequences for the world due to this overdependence.
Increasingly, business and scientific resources, but not the US administration or corporate media, are testifying that “peak oil” is upon us.
Peak Oil is the watershed of worldwide oil production; that is, new reserves of oil will not be found that can meet the growing demand.
But one organization has sparked a response to this situation. Beyond Oil is an interfaith and community-led effort by The Shalom Center, guided by Charles Lenchner and Rabbi Arthur Waskow, which is taking action to raise consciousness about America”s oil addiction and make it a priority by promoting action at the individual, denominational, community, and national levels (www.shalomctr.org).
