If you search the website of the Irish Times for the phrase “Peak Oil” you will find that it appears only once in 2019, in a motoring column, and only then as a throwaway comparison to the Chinese car industry. It is the first time the phrase has appeared in Ireland’s most august newspaper since 2017, when it appeared twice. Then it appears again, once or twice, in 2015.
It’s a far cry from the good old days of 2010 and 2011, years when the Irish Times published not one, not two, but over 70, articles referring, at least in passing, to “Peak Oil”.
On December 19th, 2009, then-Irish Times environmental columnist John Gibbons declared, as part of an article called “Six Reasons why Earth won’t cope for long” (emphasis added):
“Peak oil: This month, the International Energy Agency formally predicted global peak oil by 2020. Today, the world burns the equivalent of 82 million barrels of oil every day. Projected growth in energy demand will see this rise to almost 100 million barrels within a decade, but by then, output from the oilfields currently in production will have plummeted to barely a third of that. A massive energy gap is looming, and with discoveries having peaked in the mid-1960s, we are approaching the bottom of the cheap oil barrel. Non-conventional oil, renewables and nuclear will be nowhere near capable of bridging this energy gap in time. The oil shocks of the coming decade will be intense.”
In fairness to Mr. Gibbons, December 2019 is still some weeks away, so there is indeed time for his prediction of “an intense oil shock” before his ten year timeframe elapses. By and large, though, the decade has seen lower, and more stable, oil prices than the one that came before it.
In June 2010, the papers environment editor, Frank MacDonald, issued a stern warning:
“The bell is tolling again now, this time for the imminent end of cheap and plentiful oil. Last week, Lloyd’s – in collaboration with think tank Chatham House – issued a White Paper, Sustainable Energy Security: Strategic Risks and Opportunities for Business, which explicitly warned that we are heading towards a global oil supply crunch and price spike – in other words, “peak oil”.”
In September of that year, the paper reported another warning:
“It is estimated that we reached peak oil two years ago: everything is made of oil, we rely on oil. Unless we all wean ourselves off oil, and plan a future without oil, we’re in big trouble.”
Very amusingly, Frank MacDonald was back at it in May 2010, this time denouncing “peak oil” sceptics, in a piece he entitled “A Dialogue of the Deaf with US Climate Sceptics”. He reported, in astonishment, that some deniers simply didn’t believe in the threat of “peak oil”:
“Fossil fuels provide 85 per cent of US energy, making them the “preferred energy source” of Americans, as Lieberman put it. The big problem, of course, is that 60 per cent of the oil they need has to be imported, often from “countries that hate us”. Yet the Heritage guys remain wedded to the oil companies.
Asked if they were concerned about peak oil, policy analyst David Kreutzer couldn’t have been more complacent. “Oil will never ever completely run out,” he said confidently. Neither was he worried about China outstripping the US in the development of renewable energy technologies, arguing that wind power was “unreliable anyway”.
There is, believe me, plenty, plenty more, including highlights like John Gibbons saying that Barack Obama was the only candidate who could save the world from the impending disaster of peak oil. It’s worth taking a look yourself if you don’t believe me.
So, why has the Irish Times stopped reporting on Peak Oil?
Well, this might surprise you, but the whole thing turned out to be utter bullshit. Oil Production has continued to increase. The US, for example, has emerged as one of the world’s largest producers of oil in the decade since 2009. Oil Prices, far from suffering catastrophic shocks, have remained relatively stable, and relatively low. The disaster? It hasn’t happened.
The Irish Times, of course, has simply stopped mentioning it.
What’s the relevance of “peak oil” to the current climate crisis? In truth, not a lot. They are different issues, but related. We are told, on the climate, to “trust the science”. But the thing with Climate Science, and Environmental Science, is that it has a long, long, long, track record of making predictions that simply don’t come to pass. When we hear people say that the world is doomed in 12 years, it is not the first time we have heard such predictions. It would be a first if it came to pass.
This is not – and I emphasise this for the critics in the back – an argument to ignore the scientists. But it should be an argument for discussing the issue rationally, and bearing in mind that the same people telling us we must radically change how we live today have told us that before, and been completely, and embarrassingly wrong.
What’s infuriating, of course, is that they never actually acknowledge that they were wrong. They simply spend years inflating a panic, and then move on, without a second’s thought, to inflating the next panic.
I, for one, refuse to panic. Because if they’re right, there ain’t a damn thing we can do about it in 12 years. And if they’re wrong, well. It wouldn’t be the first time, would it?

You don’t understand how capitalism works. The main driver is population growth. And when your birth rate is below replacement, like in the US and Europe. You have to increase mass immigration to keep your economy growing, and pay for social welfare programs.

“One of the realities, according to the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) — the state authority for community protection and preparedness — is that terrorism is now a threat everywhere in Sweden, and therefore even smaller municipalities need to be prepared for terrorist acts to occur… From the beginning of 2019 to the end of July, there were 120 bombings in Sweden, according to police statistics. The figure represents an increase of 45% over the same period last year, when 83 bombings took place. The south of Sweden has been particularly badly hit, with 44 bombings… “Exposure to sexual crimes has risen sharply during Morgan Johansson’s (S) time as Minister of Justice: for the third consecutive year, the number of reported rapes in 2018 increased to 20 reported rapes per day. So far this year, the number of reported rapes has increased by 14 percent… In Sweden — one of the world’s most equal countries — women’s freedom is diminishing. That women do not have the same opportunity to move freely in the streets and squares without having to worry about being exposed to crime, is a serious restriction on women’s freedom and self-determination. While more women are reporting sexual offenses, the rate of resolved rapes is still frighteningly low. A review of the rapes reported in recent years shows that only 5 out of 100 reported rapes lead to conviction… Another population group that has been suffering under the lack of law and order in Sweden is children. According to BRÅ, there has been a significant increase in robberies against young people in recent years. In just a few years, the number of reports of robberies against people under 18 has significantly increased, from 1,084 reported robberies in 2015 to 1,896 in 2018 — an increase of 75%. There have already been 1,247 reports of robberies against young people in 2019 so far. According to Sven Granath, a criminologist with the Swedish police, the increase in robberies against young people could be because it has become harder to rob older people or to steal from shops. “It has become harder and then they go after a group that cannot protect itself as well. They also have what other youths want, such as mopeds, phones and jewelry” said Granath. It would appear that Prime Minister Löfven has indeed lost control of Sweden.”

Despite recent efforts to transition to renewable energy, Germany still lies in the upper quarter of the country comparison, behind countries such as Poland, Czechia, Greece and Bulgaria. The government is aiming to phase out coal by 2038.”

“With the “Russiagate” hoax proving to be the “most fraudulent political scandal in American history,” as Princeton Professor Stephen Cohen puts it, now we have emerging an alternative – “Ukrainegate”… Trouble is that this alternative conspiracy could backfire badly for Trump’s enemies. Because, despite the obsession with trying to impeach Trump, the renewed focus on Ukraine raises legitimate and serious questions about the past dealings of Joe Biden… The appointment of Biden’s washed-up son to a plum job in Ukraine should have merited intense US media scrutiny and investigation. But it didn’t. One can only imagine their reaction if, say, it had been Trump and one of his sons involved… Ukrainegate could turn out to be even far more damaging to the Democrats. Because there is evidence that it was the US-backed Kiev regime which helped seed political dirt on Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign manager. Manafort is facing jail time for fraud and tax offenses unearthed by the Mueller probe. Mueller did not find any link between Manafort and a “Kremlin influence campaign”, as was speculated. However, because Manafort did work previously as a political manager for the ousted Ukrainian President Yanukovcyh, he was seen as a liability for Trump. Was Russiagate always Ukrainegate all along? Apart from Biden’s potential personal conflict of interests in Ukraine, the country may turn out to be the key to where the whole Russiagate fiasco was first dreamt up by Democrats, Kiev regime operatives and US intelligence enemies of Trump…Ukrainegate has a lot more political skeletons to tumble from the wardrobe. Those skeletons may bury Democrats and their liberal media-intelligence backers, rather than Trump.”

“Democrats themselves describe it in this way. For example, here is how Rob Kall, the director of one of the progressive Democrat websites, described the purpose of the investigation: “The idea should be to keep the impeachment going as long as possible, with new testimonies and new releases of disclosures of alleged corruption and treason on a regular basis. “Looking at impeachment as a process for removing the president is the wrong way of thinking about it. Looking at it as a key that gives access to investigative tools is the smarter, more strategic, way of looking at it. “Ideally, it will get so bad for Trump that the Republicans will end up putting up someone else to run in the general election. “But keeping him under investigation, at least through the November election, will increasingly erode the support of both Trump and the Republican party brand, making a Democratic takeover of the Senate and the White House, and an increased control of the House even more likely.” In other words, it is a political power play. The outcome depends on whether Americans see the impeachment investigation as another orchestrated hoax like Russiagate or whether they fall for the hoax as they initially did with the Russiagate investigation. The United States does not have a media. It has a propaganda ministry that helps the ruling elites control the explanations that Americans are given. Polls show that Americans have lost confidence in the media. If so, the impeachment investigation will backfire on the Democrats. The ultimate purpose of the constant attacks on Trump is to teach the American voters that electing a president who is disapproved by the Establishment is futile. The Establishment simply will not permit any change and will frustrate and destroy any president not selected by them as a candidate.”

“What’s Wrong With Chinese GDP Data?”
https://tinyurl.com/y4cbllma macrohive
“Skepticism has always surrounded Chinese growth data, especially its GDP statistics. The data is released extremely quickly after the end of a quarter and is hardly ever revised, making one wonder if it’s simply invented. Indeed, local and provincial officials are pressured to meet growth quotas handed down by the government, so there’s pressure to bias national GDP data upwards from those providing it. Here, we break down a recent Fed paper, ‘Is China Fudging Its GDP Figures? Evidence from Trading Partner Data’, to reveal a new take on assessing China’s economic activity. What Alternative Measures have People Used? Famously, in 2007 the current Premier, Li Keqiang, said he focused on ‘alternative indicators’ including electricity consumption, the volume of rail cargo, and the amount of loans disbursed. He added that ‘all other figures, especially GDP statistics are for reference only’… So What Chinese Indicators Most Closely Follow Growth? The Fed paper looks at a suite of 14 domestic indicators that track the external measure of Chinese imports and find that 8 work best (see table below for full list, extracted from the paper). These are: electricity, exports, industrial production, an index of consumer expectations, fixed asset investment, floor space construction, retail sales, and rail freight. You’ll note that this list doesn’t include lending data, which was often found to be a countercyclical indicator. Importantly, it also doesn’t include GDP. The weakest indicators of the 8 are retail sales and fixed asset investment. In the end, the Fed uses all 8 indicators to construct an overall activity called the ‘China cyclical activity tracker (C-CAT)’. What Does the C-CAT Measure Tell Us About Recent Chinese Growth? The main conclusion is that since 2013, GDP figures look suspiciously smooth. Notably, the C-CAT measure showed much slower cyclical growth in 2015 than official GDP. But the trend growth of China appears to be accurately measured by official GDP data. As for the 2019 data, official GDP data and the C-CAT measure appear to be giving similar measures for Chinese growth (see chart). Additionally, as The IIF’s Robin Brooks recent noted: Our China activity tracker, which diverges from official GDP, remains broadly stable at around 5% y/y.”

Agreed that battery-electric is likely to be more practicable than hydrogen for small passenger cars. This isn’t particularly surprising, considering the poor whole-cycle efficiency of hydrogen; the safety issues surrounding the use of compressed hydrogen; the infrastructure costs, technical difficulties and energy requirements of liquid hydrogen and the sheer bulk of uncompressed hydrogen (i.e. gas-bag vehicles).
For larger vehicles, like buses, trucks and trains; the practicality of hydrogen is better, as simple non-compressed tanks can be used to feed compression ignition or gas turbine based engines – probably using dual injection with diesel. What is more, rapid charging is more important in these cases, as these vehicles tend to have a high utilisation factor and cannot wait hours to recharge. Given that these modes are inherently more energy efficient anyway, we may find that engineering simplicity and low infrastructure cost of locally produced non-compressed hydrogen tends to beat the inherently greater efficiency of battery electric. Remember that gas bag vehicles have been used since the early years of the 20th century. Given that routes tend to follow hubs, waste heat from hydrogen production and burning can find uses in heating. All in all, overall efficiency less burdensome for these transport modes.
I tend to see things differently to you, as it is my belief that all countries are now facing a growing squeeze on prosperity due to declining fossil fuel EROI. There will be fewer cars on the road in 10 years’ time, regardless of how they are fuelled or powered, because average incomes are going to decline. In terms of what fuels those cars use; I would suggest that neither hydrogen nor battery-electric are strong contenders. Over the next few decades, the focus will be on solutions that people can easily afford and that negate the need for large new infrastructure investment – including electrical infrastructure.
This suggests to me that small vehicles are most likely to be powered by fossil fuels, but attempts will be made to improve economics by making them smaller, lighter, and simpler and by eliminating embedded features that are superfluous to their primary function. You are likely to see more LPG powered vehicles and I would expect passenger diesel powered cars to decline in proportion to gasoline, as diesel will become relatively more expensive due to scarcity in the years ahead. There may be attempts to expand hybrid drive systems, but my guess is that this will focus on low cost measures like hydraulic hybrid or compressed air, as these options allow braking energy to be recovered more cheaply and with less embodied energy than an electric hybrid. Compressed natural gas is a strong contender across all vehicle grades for the next few decades.
As electricity supply becomes more intermittent and storage capacity proves to be unaffordable; power supply disruption will weigh heavily upon producers and consumers alike. Workers will be expected to be on call to work when power is available and to take unpaid time off during disruptions. Expect people to live closer to where they work and to walk or cycle as their wages prove insufficient for powered transport.
To summarise: The car of the next 10-30 years is more likely to look like a 1990s Fiat Panda, lightweight and with no frills and fitted with a hybrid drive train that allows braking energy recovery. It will be cheap to make and buy, for a consumer base with lower income that want the utility of a car and will keep fuel use down by reducing mileage. There will be fewer cars in total. Battery-electric car usage is likely to decline, as fewer people will be capable of stumping up the increased purchase cost; subsidy will not be affordable to governments and recharging infrastructure will be a cost burden that no one will want to pay for. Public transport will be about what it is now, but more crowded, with some use of hydrogen in hybrid diesel-hydrogen mode foreseeable. More people will walk and cycle because they cannot afford to travel any other way and therefore have no choice.

This is not because of the tech but because of the systematic nature of the economics and human behavior. IOW, we may not even be able to make the simple (tech) changes you mention because we cannot afford it and people will resist change until it is too late. It is likely these changes will be made regionally and locally but globally I see this unlikely. If you look at global primary power and the amount of that is not Fossil then one gets pessimistic. When we look at large scale storage the situation is even worse.

Good. This is ultimately our only way out of the energy-resource thermodynamic collapse. The Earth is our cradle, but if we fail to exploit resources outside of it, it will soon turn into an oppressive prison.

Idaho, you are wasting your time with the market watch. The markets are rigged. Waiting for the crash will disappoint. Markets will crash someday but probably not for normal reasons we can relate to from history or watching trends. We are in a new market reality of rigidity. The powers are not going to allow dramatic swings. Of course one day they will lose control but good luck picking that day.

“Kunstler: Democrats “Set A Dumpster Fire On Their Own Garbage Barge”
https://tinyurl.com/yyao9mgj Kunstler
“UkraineGate, son of RussiaGate, raises an interesting question: is our Central Intelligence Agency really this crude that they would loan out a CIA officer to the White House’s National Security Council (NSC) and use him as a weapon to shiv the occupant of the oval office? Or was The New York Times’s unmasking of the “whistleblower” just another ruse by the Deep State Disinfo Division?.. So much material in this tale doesn’t add up that it looks like the results of a math test in a Baltimore middle school. For one thing, the now public whistleblower complaint makes it clear that the whistleblower’s information is second-hand. The Intel Community Whistleblower Protection Act (ICWPA) explicitly prohibits complaints based on second-hand news:… Others have pointed out that the whistleblower’s complaint was composed as a legal brief, leading to the inference that it was constructed by lawyers and perhaps a team of lawyers. The whistleblower’s lawyer is Andrew Bakaj, a former CIA employee who got his start interning for Senator Chuck Schumer and then Hillary Clinton. The Washingtonian said Bakaj “actually wrote the CIA’s internal rules on whistleblowing.” Is that so? Did he write Form 401 then? His client’s complaint states: “I was not a direct witness to most of the events described. However, I found my colleagues’ accounts of these events to be credible because, in almost all cases, multiple officials recounted fact patterns that were consistent with one another.” In other words, second-hand information. Dismissed. Everyone and his uncle remembers the infamous threat issued to Mr. Trump by Senator Schumer during the transition period in January, 2017: “Let me tell you: You take on the intelligence community — they have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you.” Perhaps Senator Schumer should have kept his pie-hole shut on that. He made it official that the Intel Community would act as an adversary and antagonist to the President, and that appears to be exactly what has happened. One suspects that this rogue agency has captured The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, and several TV cable news networks as well. And now they are metamorphosing into an enemy of the people.”

Antius, all of the German engineers, that the US ‘imported’ after WW2, that designed and built the rockets that put the first US satellites and men in orbit, and then to the moon, are dead.
The new generation of US engineers and scientists cannot build anything that works. I read articles frequently that the new military systems and vehicles/planes/ships are junk. The parts for the F35 come from 80 countries. The parts for the F16, ditto. If there is a war, the US cannot even manufacture the stuff they will need to fight it. Not to mention that a draft to replace the men is not possible in today’s US.
The dying US has a lot of druggie dreams that will never happen. The moon space station is one of them. They have to hitch a ride to the one we have because they no longer have the means to get there. the US is a sick joke that should be put out of it’s misery.
BTW: We reached peak NET oil energy long ago, maybe decades. All barrels of things that burn are NOT equal.
