Bangladesh’s interim government is planning to import gas from Myanmar to meet its immediate demands, a step which is also likely to help it achieve its target to overcome the gas deficit by 2009.
“We are thinking of buying gas from Myanmar as it is the only country around us with gas surplus,” Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Energy and Mineral resources ministry M Tamim said on Sunday.
He said the government has already received a proposal from Myanmar suggesting that it would export gas to Bangladesh if a portion of the fertiliser produced in Chittagong is shared with them.
“We will either have to find new gas fields or import gas to solve the crisis in the long run”, Tamim said.
His comments in the wake of increasing demand for gas, which now stands at 1,833 million cubic feet per day against the current production of 1,738 million cubic feet.
