Anti-airport campaigners gatecrashed Virgin Atlantic’s 25th birthday party at London’s Heathrow airport yesterday in protest at plans to allow the aviation industry to expand using biofuels.
Two protesters dressed as stewardesses climbed on top of the entrance to the Virgin complex at terminal three where the celebration was being held and unfurled banners reading: “Aviation Industry: No Way Out” and “Climate Criminals Inside.”
More activists, also dressed as stewardesses, handed out leaflets outside to partygoers and members of the public explaining the dangers of plans to switch from aviation fuel to biofuels.
The protest was organised by Plane Stupid and Action Against Agrofuels (AAA).
Virgin has been a staunch supporter of biofuels as a solution to the steeply rising emissions from aircraft, but scientists and environmentalists argue that biofuels are worse than aviation fuel and cause deforestation.
