Some service stations and bulk fuel suppliers in north-west Victoria have run out of diesel because of a problem with supplies from the Altona Mobil refinery.
Low supplies have forced the abandonment of some ambulance services in Swan Hill and Morwell in south-east Victoria.
Distributors have had problems sourcing diesel for the past 10 days, and expect it could be three weeks before supplies return to normal.
Rural Ambulance Victoria (RAV) says a shortage of diesel caused two of its ambulances to almost run out of fuel this week.
Ambulance units operating overnight in Swan Hill and Morwell earlier this week had to be abandoned, because they were low on diesel and could not be refilled.
