AUSTRALIA: A crude awakening

HAVE the policy mandarins in George Street been sniffing petrol instead of putting it in their taxpayer-funded cars?

It’s the only possible explanation for the hare-brained proposal to regulate petrol prices in Queensland.

The logic – and we use the term loosely in this context – goes that motorists are not getting the full benefit of the State Government’s $540 million a year fuel subsidy, which translates to about 9c a litre after allowing for the impact of the GST.

Therefore, according to Premier Anna Bligh, we may have to consider regulating fuel prices and penalising petrol retailers who don’t appear to be passing on the full benefit of the subsidy to consumers.
