AUS: Group has plan if oil crisis starts to bite here

Items in a typical supermarket trolley full of food in Victoria will have collectively travelled 70,000km to come together.

“That’s nearly twice round the globe,” said Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre coordinator Sonya Wallace, who is part of a Coast-based group researching and compiling an action plan should the much-vaunted peak oil crisis arrive.

The group members are responding to the likely need for local sustainable living conditions and food supply after the cost of fuel reaches beyond the ability to continue current transport and supply movements.

The Victorian study, which showed just how far some imported foods travel to get to the supermarket is just one of the incredible pieces of data which help keep them motivated.

“The peak oil planning came out of oil shocks in the 1970s (when the cost of oil quadrupled),” said Ms Wallace, who has had a strong interest in peak oil since completing a permaculture course last year.

“It is all about what to do when we run out of energy.”
