As fuel costs rise, so do sales of space heaters

Homeowners trying to save money during a time of high-priced natural gas and heating oil are opting for space heaters to get through the winter.

Nationally, the sale of space heaters has soared.
Ace Hardware reports that sales of space heaters at the company’s 4,700 stores rose 34 percent from October to December, compared to the same period a year ago. The hardware store chains Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse have reported brisk sales of space heaters.

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that, despite a warmer winter, consumers will pay 35 percent more this year to heat their homes with natural gas and 23 percent more for heating oil than last year.
