President Bush said in his recent State of the Union address that he wants the government to speed up its research into alternative energy sources. Apparently he means it, as this week he has traveled to three states to promote his ideas.
The president can bring immense attention to this task of energy transformation that is vital to our economy and even our security. Rising prices alone – fueled by greater demand for oil from developing nations like China and India – dictate what must be done. But adding to the urgency is the instability or anti-American hostility of many oil-producing nations which supply a lot of our energy needs.
