A Letter To Mothers and Grandmothers

Dear Mothers and Grandmothers,

I write to you because you are the keepers of the future, the ones who have the children, rear the children and sustain the children. You are the ones who sacrifice for the children, who save for the children, who watch over them throughout their lives and yours.

And now I believe that you are the ones who will come forward and let our government know that they may not play games with the future of those children. As storms become more violent, as deserts spread over farmlands, as glaciers melt and floods ruin homes and crops, the world is daily becoming more chaotic. As your children grow up the oceans will rise and cover more islands, coastal cities and farmlands. As your children go out into the world it will be getting hotter and drier in some areas and wetter and colder in others. And all of these changes threaten their supply of food and water. Millions of people will be driven off their ancestral lands by the heat and drought, by parched soils and dry wells, to wander in search of food and water with no regard for national boundaries. While in other areas Katrina-like events will happen all over the world in which our children must live.
