$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('C8', 'I') don't feel my outlook is too colored by my age. I have two young sons that I want to see enter a bright world (very desperately).
My view is not a projection of my personal age- the world really is declining rapidly, civilization is dying
This is a good counter argument to my opening post. Strummer and others also pointed out quite clearly the external factors that point to the decline of our civilization.
We can see the continuation of civilization's decline beyond our biological life spans. And we do have children who we desperately wish will enjoy healthy environments. As Sea Gypsy pointed out you give the best you can before they reach adulthood when they are then on their own. As it always has been through the ages.
Here is something interesting to consider. If we go into the mind set of previous generations from the past we can see that there were no assumptions of future stability for their offspring. Wars, famine and disease where a constant. Parents would not feel any sense of responsibility for the eventual destiny of their offspring because this was clearly beyond their control. The most they could do was as Sea Gypsy stated. Give them the best tools possible before they leave the nest.
Today we have this absurd and novel orientation that we can somehow control the future for our children if only we would affect better regulations. We project our concern as parents way beyond the immediate of providing for our children and reach into their futures with high levels of anxiety about the hardships they will face later this century. No past generation really did this. And this is a sign of how we have all become socialized with a sense of self entitlement to a stable environment. It's interesting. We fear all the consequences of human overshoot coming up but actually in the past when our predators (germs, famine, wars, environmental calamities) constantly kept us in check we surrendered quite humbly our children's fate to an insecure future world. This is an unprecedented new orientation.
This may come as a surprise to some but this new orientation is actually a confirmation of how far we have taken our hubris in how we see our species place in the world.
Patiently awaiting the pathogens. Our resiliency resembles an invasive weed. We are the Kudzu Ape
