World's largest boring machine augmenting Niagara hydro

Unread postby Denny » Wed 09 Aug 2006, 23:28:50

They're tapping more from the mighty Niagara. A new power tunnel will augment two existing ones through the rock 100 m. beneath the city of Niagara Falls, carrying water 10 km down river to the Queenston power plant.

The boring machine is really impressive, it will cut a diameter 65% larger than the Chunnel. It will have a crew of 30.

The outcome is expected to be 1.6 billon kwh of additional electricic power per year.

You're right, it's certainly very large but also extremely boring.

The chunnel has a diameter of 7.6 m so that would make the head of this boring machine 12.54 m, which is roughly the height of 18 dead 7 year olds.
Peak liquid energy energy oil not crisis crisis, it is a bollocks to that.

That's what I though Chicken Little when clicking on the title, how can a machine be boring? Either a machine is active or it goes to the scrap yard, so far the definition. This equally does not allow a machine to be interesting, intelligent or seductive.

Clearly you haven't met Tiffiny, my Sex-Bot 6000.

As for the additional Niagara power, how much of it will go to Canada versus how much will go to the United States?

Or does it not matter?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')s for the additional Niagara power, how much of it will go to Canada versus how much will go to the United States?

Or does it not matter?

Specifically, the power will be produced by Ontario Power Generation, so that is for Canada. But to some extent it makes little difference, as Ontario has been in a deficit position for some time in power supply vs demand, so it buys power at peak times from its southern neighbours and Quebec. So, this added power supply will alleviate this demand. Ontario is part of the northeastern power grid, that same one that failed back in August, 2004.
