Energy is put onto the market and if I don't use it somebody will.
Low energy light bulbs are full of harmful crap and they have a flicker.

While the party is still going I am not going to cut back and I think it pointless anyway.

When things get real bad market forces will force us to use less energy.

Most of the population are still unaware of peak oil and I wonder if they are better off that way?

Before thinngs get really bad why not enjoy the party?

Why not go ahead and just burn it?

Up to now, just burning it (big houses, big cars, big spending) compensated for other deficiencies in the race to mate.

I'm here to tell you, that's changing. The ladies are going to be looking for other qualities, Rambo.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Rambo', 'W')hile the party is still going I am not going to cut back and I think it pointless anyway.

If you are smart, you will do both.

You don't have to miss the party. You just have to train and acclimatise enough to cope with one of those energy emergencies we will get in the fullness of time. Because when you are in the shit, you can tell who has been there before pretty fast. They are the ones who don't discover what true darkness means when the street lights go out, or can run the couple of dozen km home on a cold rainy night when the train doesn't run, instead of standing there shivering hoping the taxis have a fast enough turnaround. If there are taxis. You can't plan for everything, but in a crisis most people are undone by the mundane. Give yourself that chance. Then drive to the movies if you want. :)

A lot of the people here are tofu-munching, bike-rider types Rambo, just look at the introduction, get to know me forum/thread. Lots of guys on bikes. They'd be pissin' and moanin' about SUV's and powerplants no matter how much oil was in the ground. They're simple relics of a by-gone era, they secretly wish everyone had to live like the Amish, then they would rule because of their mastery of the bicycle and cell-phone. I on the other hand live like the party will never end, me and mine have crude-oil fueled bonfires every friday night, we roast endangered species and breath tar soot while bad-mouthing Al Gore. Join us Rambo, we can come out of PO smellin' like a rose if we can recruit enough converts. We'll flay the menfolk and enslave the women. All will bow before us and our biodiesel fueled Hummers, or they will perish in our bio-fuel rendering vats.Either way we win.
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave

Well said I will never live the green life.

I have no doubt peak oil is very real but I do not wish to live like a hippy while the party is still going.

We can not deal with peak oil rather peak oil will deal with us until then party on.

How much time do we have left I don't know but I am not going to waste it living like a 60s hippy.

60s hippies had a lot more fun than young people today seem to be having and it cost a lot less too. :-D

Rambo you are a person of rare intelligence and insight and I will tell you why:

You are honest enough to know the American Way Of Life is non-negotiable, that humans and all other livings things ALWAYS party all they can until the dieoff, and if possible accelerate the growth and partyin' up until the end.

I raise a glass of beer, wine, or other fermented beverage to you sir!

PS - I'm only cheap these days because I've been financially smacked down, and because by being uber-cheap, I can better afford guns, GUNS wonderful GUNS!! I love guns!!! I love that sniper-smiley too!

So what are you going to do, try to drown out the fear w/ your new stereo system?

You sound like a junkie who doesn't want to quit until circumstances force him to. Better to take matters into your own hands so the adjustment later on will be easier.

But then again, I don't know you, maybe your way is better. Get while the getting is good. I feel like that in some regards but I'm not afraid of a low-energy future & am planning for it.

By living a less energy wasteful life one can easily maintain just as nice of a lifestyle while spending a fraction of the money needed to maintain an energy wasting lifestyle.

From a somewhat non-altruistic perspective that's one huge benefit of not fully participating in the squandering of what remains.

That doesn't sound very dumb to me. Sounds pretty smart, in fact! :)

Man's a party animal... that ain't gonna change.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I believe in peak oil, yet I do nothing to prepare. I'm a hypogycemic and if I go more than 6 hours without eating I get fatigued and pass out... I'm gonna be toast when tshtf. So I may as well party now while living is still easy.

Two lions are sitting on a hill in Africa between meals. The first lion is reading the newspaper. He puts it down and looks at the second lion.

"It says here that in 50 years there won't be any lions in the wild because of poachers, loss of habitat and lack of prey."

"Really," says the second lion.

"Yeah, isn't that awful?" the first lion replies.

"How long do lions live?" asked the second lion.

"Maybe 10-15 years in the wild, more if you are in a zoo," said the first lion.

"Hmm," said the second lion, "it's not too bad, I guess. But it's sure gonna suck for those lions in 50 years. I think I'm going to take a nap. Wake me up if you see any food or hot lionesses."

Thanks and I like that line.

What ever comes after humans will have no use for oil.

People dont want to know about peak oil because until it hits them you are a nut in their eyes.

And if they do wake up there is nothing they can really do about it.

We on this board debate peak oil however you can bet your ass that the elite have a plan that will make things a lot worse for us.

During the party I have got to visit many nations due to cheap flights if this is gone in the future I still did it while I could.

I dont worry but I do follow events and I would say the New World Order is our number one problem right now.

You know, when I first learned about P.O., I about drove myself nuts wondering wtf I was gonna do to maximize my chances of survival. Eventually however, when I really started digging deep into how I felt about these things, I started to realize that you know what? I like my one-cup-a-morning-ground-from-whole-bean-gourmet-South-American-coffee. I like being able to drive (yes, DRIVE, but at least I have a 30-or-so mpg Toyota instead of a f#cking pig SUV) to the local megaplex for an occasional movie. I like being able to go to a store and buy the stuff I need (tho' my needs are certainly modest compared to most). I like toilet paper instead of a corn cob. And I like the fact that I've been able to enjoy these and many other conveniences, comforts and entertainments throughout my life in relative safety and with (relatively speaking) minimal effort.

While I did enjoy a more active and 'woodsman' sort of lifestyle in my younger days, the fact is that I've been suburbanized for so many years now that I don't know that I particularly want to return to that type of life, much less that I'm even still capable of it, and especially if it means doing so in an even more rustic fashion coupled with a constant need to look over my shoulder for approaching raiders.

So I've pretty much gotten to the point where I've said 'f#ck it'. I know where we're at, I know what's likely coming (I tend to lean towards Kunstler's 'Long Emergency' scenario), and I figure I'm just going to keep on living my life as I am now for as long as I'm able, and if it gets to the point where it's a literal fight to survive on a daily basis I'll probably eat poison or put a bullet through my skull, because frankly that isn't living anyway.

And besides, "On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero."

So I say, screw 'preparing'; we're all dead eventually.

Please note however that I am not advocating a continuation of gluttonous consumerism...

I like this idea. The population needs to be reduced anyway. But hey, we could be implementing this idea right now. All we need is a crematorium. We render the fat first, cremate what remains after that, give a small vial of ashes to the dearly beloveds, and no needs to be the wiser. Cruelty free human biodiesel.

Makes ya wonder, doesn't it?
