I think for many people, the "moment" will be when they lose their job.

I'm going to be made redundant in about nine months, so that's when it will hit me. I'm desperate to get something like a roof over me (owned, not rented), because I may be unemployed for a long, long time.

Of course, I may get a new job in time, and I'm doing all I can in that direction. But I have a pretty good idea what the job market is like. Been fishing in it for the last two years, since I became peak oil aware...

I don't think we will be hunter gathering either. Well, not if we can organize our communities. If we can understand how to manage density in our infrastructure and how to integrate renewables along with wind and solar we should be fine to a point where we don't over consume.

My concern is that, as I have described, the peak is more like a crest. When you are out hiking up a mountain there are usually several times where you know that you are close to the top but it is a false top upon which you discover you still have farther to go. That is what it is like to approach the peak on the upward side of the crest. Truly you only know for sure when you are going down the other side. Going down the other side is wholly different, however, than what it was like going up.

I fear that because it will be tempting to believe that the peak is far off, owing to all the little peaks along the way, that society will not make the changes necessary to function after the peak. There are investments that will be cheaper to pull off if we can use fossil fuels to help us rather than a stressed alternative net. It cold mean many generations lost to a lower level of sustainability or it could mean war(s).
