You know the masses have accepted peak oil when they stop going to the gym and realize that it will cost them less to just eat less. Then they don’t have to spend money to burn off the extra calories.

Food is cheaper than gasoline.

Food is what makes the bicycle go zoom. Fuel for the shovel. The spading fork. The brain.

Food is not the problem, per se. Wasting energy is. Going to the gym to burn off calories is wasting energy.

I don't think that the masses will ever accept peak oil. They may eventually grudgingly acknowledge an energy crisis caused by peak oil.

It costs me $10 in fuel to drive to the favorite mountain bike park. I can do a nice roadie ride from my house, stop for lunch and come out a head money wise. So, guess what I've been doing latley. I've also noticed local mountain bike racing attendance has dropped considerably, probably due to the recent hikes in transportation costs.

My coworkers drive to work, and then they drive to the gym where they pay $40 a month to walk on a treadmill. And they think I'm wierd cause I walk to work.

When MSN mentions "The End of Suburbia".

Link

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.')..celebrated in a 2004 film called "The End of Suburbia."...but that everything in the suburbs -- from stores to schools to restaurants -- requires increasingly expensive trips in cars...There's even talk of crude hitting $100 per barrel...

The article reads like something Kunstler would write after a handfull of Valium. Game over man, GAME OVER.

edit: I knew I should have clarified my grammar.

or US after we've had the Valium before or after reading the article?! ;)

That article was far from being doomer porn. It never once talked about things maybe getting real bad and there was a clear easy solution to the problems it presents.

All it says is driving may get more expensive so living in cities may be the way to go in an effort to save money in the long run.

Notice how they took the savings from not driving and used that to increase the amount of mortgage you could afford? No need to take those savings and actually do something like oh say save it, just get a more expensive house instead.

I think the point was that the higher costs of closer housing could be recouped by the savings of smaller commutes. Not necessarily fancier houses.

...........when instead of trying to run me off the road, rednecks who USED TO love the government seem to have a new respect for bikers. they not only dont kill me or hurl trash at me, they honk to give me the thumbs up and ask me about my road bike when im stopped downtown. also when most of my friends ask me to help them buy a gun rather than wineing in my ear about my gun ownership.

When things stop showing up at the grocery store.

When you cant afford to get to work cause you cant afford $100.00 fill ups.

When the airlines, auto makers, heavy construction companies are falling over dead.

When my neighbor breaks into my house cause his newborn has no food.

PO wont hit fully till major societies are in major trouble.

When the average man just can not make it anymore. When the social structure strains and breaks and pple lose fear of authority and all social inhabitions. When going to a store or just out and about is a dangerous activity.

When no one will sell you life insurance (or any insurance) cause one, its a suckers bet and two, because the agents are too concerned about surviving and could finally admit to not giving a crap about you.

Till there are major snags in society, I dont think anyone in power or position will admit to peak oil hitting. Till society wakes up as a hole and say WTF is happening here? then PO will be in full force and nothing can stop it then. Coincedentially, it will be way too late to save anyone at that point. Every man for himself.

When CERA and the Oil & Gas industry mount a massive public relations campaign to tell you that it hasn't and won't anytime soon.

Good indicators will include rural poor commutors finding they can make more money receiving welfare than what they earn minus the cost of getting there by pickup truck. A later indicator will be when outer suburban and exurban (The crossover between suburbia to exurbia generally occurs at the point where deer road kill exceeds that from cats and dogs and is comparable to that from skunk, possum, and racoon combined in total mass.) commuters prefer cuvs to suvs by at least a 2 to 1 margin. A third indicator will be a sustained and likely permanent deceleration in sales growth for Walmart, Walgreens, Rite Aid,Home Depot, Lowes, KMart and Target. Liquor sales will show an increase and demand for mobile homes, manufactured houses, trailers, etc will increase relative to that for new detached single family houses over 2000 square feet.

When the West starts making up lame excuses for attacking (and controlling) the oil-heavy, military handicapped Middle East, while ignoring genocide atrocities in other non-oil producing countries.

Hmmm. With this definition, we're over 10 years into Peak Oil.
