'Recession Apocalypse': Preparing for the End of the World

Nice article.

Leave it to the MSM to combine survivalism and a weight-loss article. :-D (I think it's pretty common for Peak Oilers to get more interested in health and fitness -- it's just that it's such a common MSM focus for a story.)

A couple of quotes from the article:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')reault's husband, Michael, 58, didn't support her lifestyle change, and they divorced in 2006.

"My husband was convinced that this wouldn't happen in our lifetime and that things would be worked out and we'd be OK. And we just really disagreed about this," she said.

That's unfortunate. Doesn't this website have some couples that 'agree to disagree' about PO?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')ventually, she hopes to sustain herself entirely from fruits and vegetables grown on her own lawn.

Perhaps it was the reporter who didn't add 'grains' to this list! (Or maybe a chicken or two?) Fruits and vegetables have vitamins and minerals, but often aren't the ideal source of calories...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Some Survivalists Stockpile Food and Guns

Breault isn't alone in her transformation. Thousands are hunkering down for an economic apocalypse and share comments about converging catastrophes on Web sites and Internet message boards, like Peakoil.com.

Some survivalists have moved to rural homesteads, or what they call "doomsteads," where they can live off the land, raise their own livestock and grow their own vegetables. Others are stockpiling food and guns in case widespread panic breaks out.

Doomsteads??? Firearms? Ammunition? Garden?

Definitely crazy whack jobs! Who needs firearms, or a garden? The government and corporations will always provide everything we need -- from the cradle to the grave. If they don't' provide it, we don't need it!!!

And there are never widespread panics in America !!! That Katrina thing well... That wasn't really America, that was just some banana republic called Louisiana that happens to be attached to the US.

And if something bad didn't happen yesterday then it will NEVER happen.

right?

These are some (paraphrased) comments I've heard in the past when I mistakenly started talking about how our future might be a little different from the last 50 years or so.

This article portrays people who question the viability or the sustainability of the "American way of life" as crazy and paranoid.

Color me crazy and paranoid then.

I don't think this article is as negatively biased as people here think it is. And I'm pretty picky about MSM coverage of peak oil. I'd say this article ranks up there with the cable news interview of REVI on the high profile peak oil coverage. I mean, just the fact you've got the word "doomstead" showing up on ABC News is a cool thing. it's not a blog or an editorial. It's a full fledged article.

I may be in the minority, but I think I prefer anonymity for this board. Frankly, there's no point in keying up any sizeable amount of people to start doing things different, because a lot of preparation depends on everything else kind of operating on cruise control for as long as possible; if there was a mad rush for conservation and sustainability, a whole lot more people would be losing jobs, and the domino effect could take out others who are already preparing but are not quite there yet. Now, I realize this is a selfish outlook, but so be it :) .

Realistically, I suspect the vast majority of people will continue to live like they've always lived, so I don't really think I have anything to worry about from a mad rush of survivalists, but if you believe that everyone can't be saved (as I do) and that there's going to necessarily be less for all (as I do), then you really don't want to be out there telling people to start hunkering down. On the contrary, I say spend away!

58?

When you're 58, you should . . .

. . .
have no dependent children.
have a decent amount of savings and/or land.
have no debt.
Your life expectancy is 20 years.

I can see why the husband wouldn't change. I think he was wrong, but I get it.

At 58 you are in the generation that will be viewed historically as the most profligate generation of the last 1,000 years.

Why admit error and change?

Why not just ride it out?

I'm on the far Doom side of the Doom scale, and even I can see it squeaking out another 5-10 years before things get out of control.

I mean, that's my absolute best case scenario, but I allow for it.

So look at it from his perspective.

If Walmart stays open for 10 more years, his life is mostly over anyway.

Why bust his ass growing peas and beans when he could be finishing his gluttonous, abusive ride through life laying on the couch watching Monday Night Football?

In defense of Boomers, they may be one of the most thoroughly media-brainwashed generations too. I mean, just LOOK at 1950s television... 8O

To this day, most Americans do and think what the TV set tells them to.

That only makes sense if you think that the cities will just implode on themselves and the doomsteaders shall inherit the earth, no muss, no fuss. I just don't see it happening that way. I think everyone's going to become a doomer in the end. It's only a matter of time.

Wow, how did PO.com get a nod? Is this Breault person a member of the site?

It would be interesting to know if there's any spike in site usage after this mention.

Actually, Kathie says she's never visited PO.com. She told them it was LATOC but they got it wrong. Her emails to me, republished with her permission.

Hi Matt,

As usual, they got it wrong. I've never been to the site peakoil.com. I mention LATOC when I tell people where to go to find out about PO. And Energy Bulletin. I'm giving up $4.00 Kombucha, not "juice."
I don't consider myself an economic survivalist. I'm interested in community building and permaculture, which they never get right.

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=7579167&page=1

It's supposed to air tonight, anyway. I can't believe I showed them that hideous picture. They blew it up and took the kids out of the picture. OMG it looks terrible.

Kathie

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '

Hi Matt, Kathie here, from ROE3. I don't know if you remember me, but we talked online a bit and met at the energy solutiions conference in NYC in 2006. My life has changed dramatically since then; I was interviewed by an AP reporter last spring who wrote a story about me that was in newspapers across the country. She really didn't get it right, but, whatever. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24808083/ I'm preparing for TEOTWAWKI, and remain a confirmed doomer. Not holing up in the woods, but trying to find community, at this point. I've changed my life completely, and feel much, much better. I'm divorced, 100 lbs thinner, and healthier than I've been in 20 years. I walk four miles/day, am riding my bike more, am almost out of debt, and am unconconcerned about the fact that I just lost my job. I've been planning other ways to make a living and have finally connected with like-minded people locally. Anyway, to get to the point, I spent the day with folks from Nightline. After reading the piece from last year, they asked to interview me, and I agreed. They came to my house, took pictures of where I walk, my little gardens, and me riding a bike, my woodstove... Just wanted to let you know that I mentioned LATOC as a site that I still go to frequently to get information. I mentioned you, Kunstler, Oil Drum, Energy Bulletin, Sharon Astyk, Carolyn Baker, PO Blues.... I don't know what the slant will be. I think they'll try to portray me as an apocalyptic nut job, but, if more people get it, good for them. If you can believe it, the people who produced the segment were unfamiliar with PO! It is still largely unknown! Hope you're well. I appreciate all you've taught me. Your site is still the best. Your forum is great, but there's too much going on for me. I can't keep up with it. The segment is supposed to be airing Tuesday night. Kathie

Actually no... ABC was referencing similar activities and attitudes to Kathie's on various websites... including this one.

It is a painful wasted opportunity for you though... all those clicks... gone.

Well not gone... ummm... you know.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I don't know. I have a great deal of faith in the collective insanity of homo sapiens sapiens. I can easily imagine many of them believing that if they just pick up a machete and join in the mass genocide of (pick any arbitrary group here), suddenly the electric lights will turn back on, the fridge will start working again, oil will be cheap, and they'll be living in the 1950s again.

So not only is the MSM good for nothing but fluff pieces, but they're so lazy they're cannabilizing each other's work. Will be interesting to see the actual clip here. Revi succeeded in conveying that he wasn't some wild-eyed alarmist, but this piece does make Kathie sound like a Ruby Ridge denizen with a flair for economics, with attendant disastrous consequences for anyone emulating her - you'll eat less, have to give up on niceties like "juice," break up your marriage, freak out your family.

Man, journalists are L-A-Z-Y. This reminds of that string of stories about the homeless carpark camp in California. The same darn homeless people got interviewed over and over, by news outlets as far away as France.

On the bright side, given the laziness of journalists, Kathie could find herself becoming a major peakoil spokesperson.

This was the 2nd story on Nightline tonight, full 6-7 minute segment or so. Seemed pretty fair for the MSM, aside from referencing "the doomsdayers" when talking about the ramifications of peak oil rather than any legitimate sounding source that has ever said anything about it.

We are a planetary species, doomers cannot hope to survive for long or survive a life worth living unless they embrace that we are all one and that a species at war with itself is doomed.

I really no longer understand the doomer mindset, I did at one point, but believe my awareness has advanced to a state where it seems rather pointless.
