Was hoping for insight and answers

After reading the last few post I don't think that will happen. It seems that the site has degaded to nothing but flame wars. It is a shame. It does not matter whether or not you feel peak oil is a problem or over population is the problem the fact of the matter is is that there is a problem. I was hoping to find meaning full discussion and not personal attacks or counter attacks.
I realize that this is an open discussion forum and everyone has the right to say whatever, I just wish we could keep focus on the major topic, peak oil.
So flame away I am not thin skinned, however I have seen what happens when there is no fuel or food. It does not matter how the problems arrived but the results are when it arrives.
I have been on this planet for over 50 years now and have seen short term fuel loss and long term fuel loss both in third world countries and in the US. It is not a pleasent sight. I have seen starvation and murder because of it. I have also live through recessions it has caused and seen there effects on communities and family's.
SO FLAME AWAY. But it does not come up with answers and answers are what we should be looking for.
Here are my questions:
What are you doing?
How are you living now if you are concerned about peak oil?
Are there answers or solutions?
Just hoping to change the direction we are going. I have seen to many other site degrade into flame wars that nothing is accomplished on them. And yes I have read the other forums on this site and enjoy some of the posts.

Well said MG-42, observing this latest flame war is about all I want to do, observe. To bring in personality conflict brings us down to everyone else's level. The situation quickly becomes problematic and hopeless.

I am seriously thinking about getting rid of my car. I work out of my home and live within 3 miles of everything I need in life. I am 45, single with 3 grown kids. (If they really want to see me they can come visit,LOL).
Between the car payment, insurance, gas and repairs, I figure I will save at least $600 per month. My health will get better due to walking everywhere. I went without a car last year for 6 weeks last year,(my car was stolen), and it ended up being one the the most happiest and carefree times of my life. Maybe more people, Americans in perticular, should think along these lines. Have studied peak oil for 3 years since Deffeyes book came out and known about peak oil subconciously since 10th grade in 1974.

I found Matt's site, informative, interesting, entertaining and while I don't agree with some of his politics, I feel more challenged by them , definitely not offended. He has better than anyone I have read so far, connected the dots to show would could be the true ramifications of peak oil.

Coal, Nuclear, Solar and Wind will never do for us what Oil and Natural Gas do. You can't plow fields and produce fertilizers from these sources. Hope we can keep up an engaging debate and a seeking of what's really the truth.

I have considered trying to do the same. We are planning on moving within the next year and I am looking for a place where that type of lifestyle might be possible. At a minimum, I would love for our family to get rid of one car and just have a hybrid.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

... and herein starts the debate about our specialness in the order of the animals. You are observing unfolding before you just exactly what we are as humans. I was taught that 'moral regard' is a matter of choosing your way into your higher character. Then life came along and instructed me differently. It is true that once you recognize what the moving Life Force is really all about, the unfoldment of Mind and Soul within will transform your animal nature to something out of the ordinary. Yet the ordinariness even in this state remains. In this place of existence, we are mortal and everything from the brain stem on up to the frontal lobes and the mysterious cavern between the pineal and pituitary has a role in what do and don't do. [It is said that memory, feeling and mental function map out onto the entire body; ergo, brain as mind falls short of a full explanation, but brain function reliably predicts various human predilections and behaviors.]

To offer hope to those who see degeneracy manifesting here, take consolation in the fact that given enough time and the right circumstances, even the most inveterate 'emotionalite' mired in tit-for-tat sparring will reach up and look for wider horizons. The emotionalizing of petty issues is almost always a coping mechanism that truly reflects the spirit of the times and speaks volumes about the path we take through frightening circumstances. Bestowed with generous amounts of compassion and understanding, these folks will eventually come to see that they act not out of rightness, superiority and/or eldership. Instead, blind impulses move them from a place of fear and uncertainty -- the resulting behaviors and communications clearly demonstrating an unsteady confidence in the process of life.

In effect, we will do best to support each other whenever possible and try with all diligence to see through our high fantasies of ourselves to the motivations that actually drive our responses. Then, we will 'see' rightly and 'act' rightly.
