Our oil supply is dwindling??
No, that cant be!

Typical response from people. I dont understand, whats so hard to grasp about this PO concept?? Is it us? Are we somehow intellectually gifted over our fellow man? I dont believe thats it, but man, sometimes I have to wonder........

There is a huge amount of grumbling over here about petrol prices - everyone is blaming the oil companies and producers. When I have on occasion tried to broach the idea that it might be something more deeper I get responses like "peak oil is a fallacy dreamt up by oil people who are trying to justify their price gouging"

Grrrrr

People generally have trouble changing a long-held belief. When a new paradigm-altering idea is dropped on them the first reaction is most often something on the order of, 'you must be nuts', or, 'I'm not even going to bother reading that nonsense'.

It takes time for some. For example, I have a brother who is a Stanford MBA, a really bright guy who has parlayed his rare gift of high intelligence into considerable wealth. He truly believes technology will find a replacement for oil... and that oil will last for generations to come.

Regarding PO, his belief is the majority opinion. Mine is the minority opinion. I'm a long veteran of holding minority opinions and beliefs...lol. But on this little issue and on all the others, I'm right.

My biggest frustration is that people just don't seem to care. They can wipe it away from their minds with "*insert government/science whatever here* will come up with something"

How can you not care about something that has the potential to impact on your own personal existence in a major way - even my own "softish landing" beliefs mean potentially major implications to the way I always thought I would live.

Yep, I agree with you guys.

Course, on the other hand, it makes for a damned fine excuse to buy yet another gun or case of ammo. :-D

My brother in law is a General Practioner and property speculator.
My sister in law is a Chemist Counsellor and Amway hustler.

I offered them both copies of End of Suburbia and Arithmetic Population and Energy.

She declined in favour of sex sin and city and the hydrogen thingie and
I eventually took them back off him several months later without him watching them.

Me, I'm just about to become a hick tamarillo grower, what would I know.

We have tried with our first creatures but we could not make them venerate us.
So let us try to make obedient respectful beings who shall

I found (to my surprise) that my brother understands PO entirely! He fully comprehends everything about it...but when it comes to anything bad happening his response is "We just wont let that happen" [smilie=dontknow.gif]

Most people have no need to worry about things like oil nor should they. Contrary to what some are claiming like that “we are headed for the Stone Age” because of dwindling oil resources, many, many others with PhD’s are saying available technology says we aren’t going anywhere near the Stone Age and in fact, are going in just the opposite direction instead. I’m with the latter group

Sure, let's look at what is replacing oil ….

Energy Independence: Biomass

World's First Biomass-To-Ethanol Plant

'Tree-power' Great Current Energy Source

Biomass Waste: Replacement For Gasoline

Microbial Fuel Cell

Geobioreactors

James Kunstler, in his new book "The Long Emergecy," mentions the "cargo cults" of the south pacific islands. They were so enamored with the goods and trinkets brought by servicemen during WWII, that they erected replica airplanes and runways in hopes that these people would come back with more goods.

The implication being that industrial civilization's lack of concern, and utter confidence in technology to solve our problems is a modern day cargo cult of sorts.

We don't have nearly enough time to find, perfect and then roll out any kind of miracle cure or techno fix. Hubby (who also has a PhD) has been reviewing bio energy literature, both out of personal interest, and in relation to his work. It's certainly a good potential stop gap measure, in some applications - but he's pretty sure most of us will be dead (of old age) before oil, in its current capacity, is entirely replaced by alternatives.

And it’s probably not going to be any kind of smooth transition. Any kind of techno-fix will be rolled out into essential services and military and those with lots of cash before it saves the general public. However you look at it, it's going to be a change of lifestyle for 99.5% of the developed world.

To counter ethanol as a viable alternative, I refer you to Tad W. Patzek a UC Berkely Proffesor.

The article states:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')Limiting yourself to the energy balance, and within that balance, just the fossil fuel used, is just scraping the surface of the problem," he says. "Corn is not 'free energy.'"

Recently, Patzek published a fifty-page study on the subject in the journal Critical Reviews in Plant Science. This time, he factored in the myriad energy inputs required by industrial agriculture, from the amount of fuel used to produce fertilizers and corn seeds to the transportation and wastewater disposal costs. All told, he believes that the cumulative energy consumed in corn farming and ethanol production is six times greater than what the end product provides your car engine in terms of power
.

Likewise, many of your other "solutions" may have similar difficulties.

From reading Science Daily it seems as though it concentrates only on good news, only casually mentioning any bad issues. Of course those who are being paid to find alternatives will say their research produces positive results. I think those who we should pay attention to, are those disinterested researchers who are engaged in verifying the research of others. Patzek, I think, qualifies as a disinterested researcher.
