James Kunstler, in his new book "The Long Emergecy," mentions the "cargo cults" of the south pacific islands. They were so enamored with the goods and trinkets brought by servicemen during WWII, that they erected replica airplanes and runways in hopes that these people would come back with more goods.
The implication being that industrial civilization's lack of concern, and utter confidence in technology to solve our problems is a modern day cargo cult of sorts.
