Your political leaning

Your preferred system would be in an "ideal" situation where there is some kind of energy supply (even if very limited) and no imminent die-off threatening your country.

Feel free to specify "other".

I find that I disagree with your definitions of liberal and socialism; I'd say liberalism is very free market oriented, and that socialist parties in most countries are totally committed to democracy and interfere only with the market with the aim of protecting the rights of the majority; the workers, while otherwise, maybe even more so than in the other ideologies, ensuring that there is competition in the free market. ----> you left out communism (but that's what you probably meant by socialism)

I appreciate your setting up this poll. However, although I consider myself a libertarian, I don't have "liberal values". So I had to vote "conservative" - but that isn't really me, either, exactly.

I think you kind of mis-labeled libertarianism.

I used "liberalism" in the colloquial American meaning. Your definition is the common one in Europe.

Socialist parties usually pursue left-wing policies, but they rarely (at least in the western countries) advocate wholesale government takeover of the means of production, as Marx required. That might change in the near future though.

Yes, Communists and Nazis were left out... they'll have to choose the wussy watered down versions (socialism or fascism).

Someone said libertarians are Republicans who smoke pot - implying liberal views on individual lifestyles. Can you, for example, be a libertarian and oppose gay marriage?

I used to be right until the right moved so far right it left me left. Ironically, the right has now moved so far right, it's come around to the left and left me right again.

I use to be a hard core conservative. Voted straight ticket republican from 1988-2004. However in the last few years I have been disturbed by the neocon agenda. In 2006 I voted independent and democrat on the local level. I knew the rednecks were right about our gun rights. Now it seems the the pinko "Beardo-the-Weirdo" hippies were right about our civil rights.

There you go, it's come down to chaos. I didn't vote in the poll and I won't vote in November. I see no point. Political thought and categories are sclerotic and moribund. When TSHTF they will, if they can, take away our guns and our civil rights. It won't matter if a Republicrat or Demican is in office. The Game is finished. Ted Kennedy said so.

Yeah. You've got your choice of the republicans that want to tell you what to do in your bedroom or the democrats that want to tell you what to do everywhere else. Seems a no-win to me.

I forget her name, but a Washington D.C. corespondent reported that as a comment made by Kennedy at a small dinner party. That's not a direct quote, but the comments were made to the younger people at the party, words to the effect that he felt sorrow for them and their future because the game is up. The tone of the op-ed was similar, that a lot of people are very worried these days. Published last year, I think, maybe in '06

Uh-huh. Same one I read I believe, except she references a book written by his nephew, who was there when Teddy spoke candidly. I tried to estimate the time period as he said something like, "when you guys are my age", so it would have been 20? 30? years thence. Maybe I should get the book from the library.

I've got a mental post-it note which says no politics, no religion on po.com.

However, your description of Socialism is a little, ahem, inaccurate - bearing in mind that half the governments in Europe are Socialist & they still function.

Also Communism is still a political goal for many people across the world and the fight is not over yet (although its' ommission from your poll speaks volumes about the hole in people's heads that still exists from the so-called 'Cold War').

"Liberal" originally meant advocating laissez-faire or free market ideals. It's been twisted around to mean the opposite. Who did that?

I'd have to say that I am a Social Democrat - that is, I think that there ought to be a vibrant private sector (regulated as necessary) and a full public sector as well. I would never want private corporations to run the roads and sewage systems, for example.

I can't stand the obnoxious and stultifying two-party system in the United States which I regard as little more than choosing between Proctor & Gamble's "Tide" or "Ivory Snow" detergents.

I would much rather we operate under a parliamentary system where parties could capture seats in Congress based upon the percentage of popular vote they obtain. A 5% minimum would prevent there being too many parties.

I am in favor of limiting corporate power (such as repealing "Personhood" for corporations). I think corporations wield far too much influence over politicians in Washington and I think corporate power unfairly treads all over labor and the ordinary American.

I would be in favor of scrapping the Income Tax in favor of a value-added sales tax - which I regard as much more democratic.

I would be in favor of scrapping the Federal Reserve and I would probably favor setting up a branch of government, answerable to the public and separate from the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial, who would be responsible for creating and regulating the money supply.
