I'd do it for awareness of the environmental degradation that is caused by massive amounts of eating (as well as the things we eat). That way, even if I don't get any attention, I still accomplish my goal a little bit.

So you do an actual fast? I "fast" once a year for a month, but it's not nearly as hardcore as not eating at all (instead, only not during daylight hours).
As for being tougher, that's a bit of a reason I did it before I was Muslim. It doesn't so much make you tougher and more appreciative of the food and other things that you receive and much better able to handle situations. I actual hate myself a little when the fasting is over since I tend to forget all of the things that I learn when I fast such as appreciation of what so many people go through everyday.
Usually the 4th or 5th day is the hardest. After about a week, I tend to not even notice that I'm fasting unless I forgot to wake up early enough for breakfast; then I'd get a nice reminder around early-mid afternoon.

At least for partial fasting (Ramadan), it seems to go easiest when you are really busy so you don't have time to think about food or water. Sitting at home on the weekends (with nothing/little to do) just kills me because you know 10 feet away is a nice hot meal.
