Why all the Star Trek hatin?

Unread postby Benzin » Mon 07 Aug 2006, 23:39:38

Greetings all. For some reason, I always end up lurking around this forum even when I say I'll never stop by again.

Anyways, why do some people here hate Star Trek so much?

It's called science FICTION for a reason. I don't know if it's known or not, but the Star Trek universe wasn't oh so great with Picard crusin' in the latest enterprise.

If I remember correctly, there were a lot of wars and much of the world and population was destroyed in WWIII. It wasn't all fun and games with lots of technology to save the day.

Now I question how society could theoretically bounce back so quick and immediately go to space, but I suppose in some dimension it could be possible. Okay, so the lack of cheap oil didn't destroy the Star Trek earth, but even that Rodenberry guy knew progress is not all forward and progressive.

Ever see the scenes on Earth in the movies? These big time captains lived in pretty humble digs. I didn't see much technology. Kirk's apartment, his house in Idaho, Picard's dream house which looked like something out of the 19th century. Things were pretty modest, probably cause most resources were used for war and other stupid human behavior in the past.

You can make the point that these were movies that didn't have huge budgets and they were made in a time when tech wasn't so ingrained in our society but it seems to me they were right on to how people would live on EARTH in the future (I'm not talking about the starships). What about those episodes when the technology failed or breaked down? Didn't Scotty always jury rig things?

Okay, I'll admit, Star Trek is a pretty optimistic view of the future. But they didn't get that over night. They skipped about 200 hundred years, remember? And like I said, this is FICTION. Nothing that will resemble our reality. Besides, everything shown in Star Trek is within the realm of theoretical possibility - just not for us.

Perhaps if humans weren't they way they are and if it weren't for this little peak oil mess... maybe we could at least make it to Mars. But alas, we wasted so much.

Anways, now that I declared how much of a nerd I am I will quietly go back to lurking.

Carry on, y'all. Carry on. :)

I loved Star Trek when I was a kid but the reason there is so much hate for it is that it makes people overly optimistic about the long term future of mankind. It encourages some of our brightest students to to go into the space sciences when there are so many other problems right here on Earth that need addressing such as climate change and resource depletion. Humanity is marked for extiction if we don't change our ways.

It isn't the optimism what I dislike of Star Trek, it's the aesthetics! (or lack thereof).

The show is a space-western. The old cowboys-killing-Indians crap all tinseled up with gee-whiz militaristic goldplated weapons and threatening aliens. Eating atrtificial food in a self-enclosed fortress of ever-expanding techno-empire in a universe populated with ugly caricatures of humans.

John Zerzan-the anarchist- wrote a devastingly funny essay about how despicable this show was.

Star Trek Deep Space 9 is my favorite TV series of all time. It wasn't because of the technology, but the quality of the story and characters. I loved the character interaction, character development over time, political intrigue, moral issues, the script, everything. It was an epic storyline that truly evolved over time.

TNG was a bit too cornucopian until they hit the borg. The characters are also not as strong as in DS9.

Archer: They had known about the problem for 30 years but had not done anything about it. But then, in 2062.... (cut off in mid sentence by communicator)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cerberus', 'W')hy no Arabs on star trek?

Chief medical officer of DS9 Julian Bashir was an Arab. This character was the greatest intellect on the show (because he was genetically enhanced), and was possibly the most benevolent character on the show.

This is what’s great about all Star Trek. Not the techno-babble (which is there as plot devices, not focal points of interest), but the human nature aspect. Star Trek is about showing what humanity could be. It’s not optimistic because of high technology, it’s optimistic because people understand each other and strive to live harmoniously. It’s optimistic because it shows the world that even in the fact of radical technological development, people can still maintain a decent sense of ethics and morality. Even with hideous and barbaric behaving creatures, people can find a common ground to cooperate and live peacefully.

Judging from some of the less then savoury attitudes towards human rights that I’ve seen expressed on these boards from time to time, it’s no wonder at all to me that some people can’t stand a show that presents a vision of such profound tolerance.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Novus', ' ')it makes people overly optimistic about the long term future of mankind.

Star Trek is about the only piece of optimistic fiction there is. Almost everything else produced by mass media is dark and highly pessimistic. We need more optimistic visions of what humanity can be, not less of them.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Novus', '
')It encourages some of our brightest students to to go into the space sciences when there are so many other problems right here on Earth that need addressing such as climate change and resource depletion. Humanity is marked for extiction if we don't change our ways.

Many would argue that something that encourages students to enter into the sciences is a good thing. Many would also correctly argue that growth is the space sciences is the only thing that will eventually lead to humanity avoiding extinction.

When The next Generation first aired I was in high school. It was my favorite show. I was hopeful for the future and thought humankind was great and that we have a great future a head of us.

I am now 33, and have come to realize that the Gene Roddenbury future will never come to be. WHY ? Because only about half of the human population is what I would consider great. The other half of the people are idiots, who are set in their ways and seem to care more about their pocket book then they do other people. Then you have about 10% of the population who only care about power and controlling others, that and 90% of the population that believes everything the media says makes for a deadly combination.

I love Star Trek but I am more a fan of the Borg, cause they are the only ones who seem to make any sense.

Theres nothing optomistic about where humanity is headed. Theres absolutly nothing optomistic about the starvation, disease, war, chaos and anarchy we will be experiencing soon as this ship we call industrial civilization goes down.
