Anyways, why do some people here hate Star Trek so much?
It's called science FICTION for a reason. I don't know if it's known or not, but the Star Trek universe wasn't oh so great with Picard crusin' in the latest enterprise.
If I remember correctly, there were a lot of wars and much of the world and population was destroyed in WWIII. It wasn't all fun and games with lots of technology to save the day.
Now I question how society could theoretically bounce back so quick and immediately go to space, but I suppose in some dimension it could be possible. Okay, so the lack of cheap oil didn't destroy the Star Trek earth, but even that Rodenberry guy knew progress is not all forward and progressive.
Ever see the scenes on Earth in the movies? These big time captains lived in pretty humble digs. I didn't see much technology. Kirk's apartment, his house in Idaho, Picard's dream house which looked like something out of the 19th century. Things were pretty modest, probably cause most resources were used for war and other stupid human behavior in the past.
You can make the point that these were movies that didn't have huge budgets and they were made in a time when tech wasn't so ingrained in our society but it seems to me they were right on to how people would live on EARTH in the future (I'm not talking about the starships). What about those episodes when the technology failed or breaked down? Didn't Scotty always jury rig things?
Okay, I'll admit, Star Trek is a pretty optimistic view of the future. But they didn't get that over night. They skipped about 200 hundred years, remember? And like I said, this is FICTION. Nothing that will resemble our reality. Besides, everything shown in Star Trek is within the realm of theoretical possibility - just not for us.
Perhaps if humans weren't they way they are and if it weren't for this little peak oil mess... maybe we could at least make it to Mars. But alas, we wasted so much.
Anways, now that I declared how much of a nerd I am I will quietly go back to lurking.
Carry on, y'all. Carry on.
