Take a look at National Geographic's "The Genographic Project"

The Genographic Project

Very interesting development indeed.

I've been considering participating in that. I think I know my ancestry, but you never know. A lot of people who thought they knew their roots got a real shock when they got a DNA analysis. People who thought they were black found out they had no African blood at all. 30% of American whites have significant amounts of non-white DNA. A lot of family skeletons are being pulled from the closet into the light of day by DNA.

I don't know if the extinction of the Neanderthals really qualifies as "current" events... :-D

I saw this guy on Anderson Cooper last night for a few minutes. The only problem with this very standard look at human evolution and movement out of Africa is that it is probably full of shit - most widely held theories seem to fit that mold :)
Humans in Savannah River Valley, Georgia, USA 50,000 years ago

You can't very easily reconcile the fact that humand 'originated' in Africa 60,000 years ago, but they had already made it to the southern USA in less than 10,000 years - maybe they took a bus ? 8O

There was a human skull found in Omo Kibish Ethiopia that was dated to be 195,000 years old. We have to re-write the anthropolgy books to show that the human story in far older then previously thought. In terms of whole human race the industrial revolution is but a blink of an eye lasting all of 0.1% of human existance on Earth.

The Neanderthals were actually not killed off. It's just a scam to make us Europeans feel. They moved to America and started the GOP.

Africans are more closely related to Homo Erectus then the rest of hunamity.

I wonder if evolution will play a roll post peak. Could humans evolve back into earlier more rugged forms. I think it could happen in the next 50,000 to 100,000 years.

Only if you assume that every trace of civilization is obliterated. I find that way too doomer.

We are still cavemen. The only real difference is we are taller and live longer due to better health and nutrition, however that can easily change.

We've also learned some things that could really make a difference to the outcome. Hygene for example, or the knowledge of germs and bacteria. Even without industrial civilisation that knowledge could have made a massive difference to survival.

I noticed it. Sounded like you were saying that Europeans are so jaded that they don't feel anything at all, too numb to care.
