PGP Alternatives

Unread postby k_semler » Mon 10 Oct 2005, 01:06:26

Does anyone have any PGP alternatives? The latest version I have is 6.5.1 Free Edition, and I know that 9.0 offeres disk encryption, email encryption, and secure erasure. Does anyone have a free program equivilant to PGP 9.0? [edited by SPG due to discussion of illegal activity], available? My only requirement is that is must run on WinXP Pro, and WinXP x64. It must also support 4096 bits of encrypton. Also it would be of great help if it could use IDEA based encryption. A GUI would be nice, but is not nessecary. Any suggestions on a replacement?

I'm sticking to the free version since I don't really want to use warez for this. Mine is PGP 6.5.8 for day-to-day file encryption, for email I use WinPT/GPG.

PGP 6.5.8 :
http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versio ... in32/6.5.8

WinPT :
http://winpt.sourceforge.net

If you want disk/volume encryption, it gets a little bit more complicated. If you are *not* using WinXP, you can use E4M, an excellent freeware volume encryption utility. If you *are* using WinXP *and* you want volume encryption, then unfortunately you may have to resort to warez ...

Seems like it meets all my requirements. Will it take my pre-existing PGP keys, or will I have to re-encrypt everything? I found some other utilities that would help greatly though.

Wow, it sure looks a heck of a lot like E4M but they claim it works under WinXP too. That's good, no need to resort to warez then :)

Thanks for the tip.

You should use a firewall, not because of the government, but because of hackers and spammers using systems to do DDOS attacks and stuff like that.

Nothing much, just financial transactions, e-mails, and the occasional classified CIA document ... nah, just kidding

Yeah, seriously though, elroy is right - you should have a firewall at least, especially if your PC is connected to "always-on" broadband.

There are thousands of "script kiddies" out there who have nothing better to do but probe all the available addresses they can, and execute hostile scripts to try to take over your computer.

If they succeed, your computer may be used as a staging ground for further attacks on other computers, to host illegal material (warez, kiddie porn, etc), which *you* may be liable for (it's your IP and connection).

I used to work in a sorta cyberwarfare dept (no worries, I'm on the good guys' team), and I've seen how easy it can sometimes be to take over a PC completely. Do be careful.

Just a friendly reminder that using/trading warez is illegal and thus not appropriate for discussion on this site. Otherwise good thread though. :)

Check out the philosophy of the
GNU operating system:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')ree as in Freedom

Welcome to the GNU Project web server. The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete UNIX like operating system which is free software: the GNU system, (GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”; it is pronounced “guh-noo,” “noo” being like the American “new”). Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the kernel Linux, are now widely used; though these systems are often referred to as “Linux”, they are more accurately called GNU/Linux systems.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is the principal organizational sponsor of the GNU Project. FSF receives very little funding from corporations or grant-making foundations, but rely on support from individuals like you. Please consider helping the FSF in one of the ways described under Help FSF! (in the navigation bar).

We support the FSF's mission to preserve, protect and promote the freedom to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer software, and to defend the rights of Free Software users. We support the freedoms of speech, press, and association on the Internet, the right to use encryption software for private communication, and the right to write software unimpeded by private monopolies.

Also check out the interesting history of PGP:
PGP Timeline$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')ome friends up loaded onto a few bulletin boards (US only) One friend (allegedly Kelly Goen) went around pay-phones with a portable, an acoustic coupler, and a list of BBS phone numbers uploading and then driving on to another area. This cloak and dagger stuff was because at the time the USG had some draconian sounding proposed law on the books which sounded like it was going to outlaw crypto. The intention was to ensure that PGP was available before this law came into effect, and to avoid being stopped if the USG took interest.
