Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.0

Unread postby Carlhole » Sun 30 Nov 2008, 21:13:59

I just downloaded Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.0 and burned the iso to dvd. I haven't installed it to my drive yet; just working off the dvd and its still pretty fast. Using it right now.

It's the slickest linux distro I've seen so far. Comes with all kinds of apps and system tools, and it recognized my hardware and network seamlessly.

Linux distro have always seemed too clunky and backwards for someone who is not a linux-geek to use. But I could definitely see myself booting up and using this OS option. It's nice to have in case some damn virus knocks out windows or something.

WTF is a "spam site"?

Some internet scammer goes to all the trouble of designing the world's most elegant Linux distro just so he could put a spam bot on your computer?

I think it's about time you got back on the Olanzapine/Ziprasidone/Quetiapine cocktail.

There are only 7 ads on that site and 5 of them are just Google links. Only one ad, for webhosting services, is large.

I never said anything moronic.

(1) I was asking a real question: WTF is a "spam site"? I've never heard of a "spam site" before.

(2) It makes no sense that the latest whiz-bang Ubuntu release would be accomplished by some online spammer. Why would a spam artist go to all the trouble of creating the latest, greatest Ubuntu just to spam his victims with a bunch of who-knows-what?

(3) Now that I am aware that a "spam site" is one that is jammed full of ads, I can't see how that criticism is the least bit legitimate. That site obviously doesn't have a whole lot of ads.

Maybe you've just become a little over-wrought what with all the excitement of Thanksgiving and everything.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', 'U')buntu Ultimate Edition 2.0

Nice. Lotsa goodies to check out on that distro; think I'll grab a copy myself. I run this one with some additions. ( Actually it's just a base Ubuntu with a custom theme and some applications removed to make room for a suitable compilation of music. None of it was particularly impressive, but I like the theme... )

One thing Carl... if you were motivated to check it out because of the 3D desktop showcased in the video, keep in mind that it takes some fairly robust hardware to have all the eye-candy enabled and still get a decent user experience.

The good news is you can select any one of three predefined profiles, less to more hardware intensive, then customize.

Folks, what's the best practice for installing Linux on a PC that already has Windows?

Should I use something like Partition Magic to make room on the drive? Or would I need to wipe out Windows and start fresh?

I'd like to explore the Linux universe but am not sure where to start.

A couple of options.

1. Two different drives. One for Linux and one for Windows. Unplug the Windows one and connect the Linux drive. Pros. Nothing is changed on the Window partition and no risk of data/partition loss. Cons. Can't access Windows drive for files. Inconvenient to have to plug and unplug a drive to get back to the other OS.

2. One HDD. Put in Linux cd and let it resize your data drive and NTFS partition. Then install Linux on remaining space. Pros. Dual boot lets you keep the option to go back and forth between OS's. Access to your Windows files in Linux. Cons. If you want to go back to just Windows, your partition will still have the Linux bootloader on it. (unless you know how to reinstall MS version.)

3. Same as 2 but you use Partition Magic to resize your drive.

Let me know if you run into any issues.

I am running the live cd. So far, I like it. I am not a big fan of the default theme nor the animated cursors though.

Seems to be fast
Natively playing movies I have that the last version of ubuntu I had would not.
Better codec support
Detects everything, though my video card does not seem to be supported, so I can't watch videos in full screen without slow down and choppy video.

I like the fact that wine is initially installed.

All in all not bad.

I am going to see what success I have with installing certain windows software I use.

You are running a live cd and it is fast!?!?! Wow. If you think it is fast now just try running it on your hard drive with a custom kernel. you would be amazed at how fast a computer can run without a bloated Windows OS or linux kernel.

It's funny that this should pop up now. In my wife's 'fix the closet' projects, out came an old box, which I started to reset up. (P333 I think)

The old Win 2k runs fast, but there is something mildly wrong with it that makes it difficult to work with.

I installed the new ubuntu off a live CD, and was impressed that I finally (after years of fiddling but not committing) got a linux to work. Of course that says more about the newer distros than me.

But man, it's slow. Which is unfortunate because now I have grand plans to set this up as the music server plugged into my stereo, blah blah blah.

Must have been the 'griping about windows' thread the other day that got everybody synced up, like a dorm full of college girls.

What is your video hardware? I'm actually a Linux programmer/admin and I'm fairly involved with Xorg (the X Windows graphics software) and video drivers.

Pentium II?

I wouldn't expect it to be fast, although it shouldn't be unusably slow. You'll definitely want to be using the right driver for your graphics hardware!

Something that will make it somewhat slower on that hardware, Ubuntu is not optimised for the Pentium II, in fact performance critical components such as glibc are optimised for the Pentium 4 (netburst architecture), as far as I know (this is definitely true of Fedora). This penalises non-netburst machines (not as badly as running non-netburst optimised code on a Pentium 4 though, which is why it's done that way) although newer machines are fast enough for it not to be to noticable and still faster than using i386 code. It's one of the reasons I always use Gentoo! ;)

One other thing is, you'll need plenty of RAM, at least 512Mb really, otherwise you really would be better off going for a lighter weight distribution.
