The BLS has data on employment in the Oil and Gas Extraction sector, either total or production workers: Databases, Tables & Calculators by Subject, go to Employment, Hours, and Earnings - National. There's been roughly a 3.5% drop, compared to about 14.5% loss in 1986.

Baker Hughes has international data, Bas.

Baker Hughes does the best job of anybody in recording rig count. There were 2200 rigs operating in 2008 before the collapse.

In North Dakota, they've gone from 59 to 180 in that time.

Smaller, more scattered oil fields require more rigs to produce the same rate as old giant fields (which needed fewer rigs.)

Baker Hughes rid count report for December 22, 2014. While the count is still higher than 2014 it has begun falling perceptibly as projects are being delayed or cancelled.

I just copied the data for the three biggest losers, California down 17 rigs from a week earlier, ND down 3 and Texas down 16. You could blame the weather for ND losing three, but I have not hear about any horrible weather in Texas or California to explain drops like these.

A 50% cut sounds about right. The few companies that have been game enough to mention there 2015 drilling plans have been 50-60% cuts, and this is before we talk about bankruptcies, which could put a real stop on things.
