They try to say they have a future but the kids really know the truth. Most painful thing I ever did is to seek the truth. It is beyond words how painful that is, and I also asked to see the future which I never should have done. Being a sheep, no wonder...

An I agree with her. New grads are entering the job market at the beginning of the biggest economic screwup in history.

I think the true tragedy is that the class of 06 probably think these "great times" are normal and will quickly go out an buy a $500K condo with their brand new $75K job.

This will give them just enough taste of the good life to get them over their heads. By 07' they'll graduate to the list of Bankrupt unemployed. The Grads of 05 will be their with them, but at least they got a year or so of the good life.

ah DC is a macho camacho type is all.
Like myself he is probably in a generous profession and sees only those around him prospering thus he believes things are good.

I also believe there are plenty of opportunities for the "right" people just that alot of folks are not the "right" people.

In my field the right person is defined :
Right = willing to travel and travel and travel - willing to work 13 - 10 to 12 hour days in a row - willing to work at heights - willing to work in hazardous situations - safety minded - highly skilled - no vacations - no whining, moaning,complaining just do your job!! - and cash those fat checks boy as we call this riding the gravy train.........

Gone are the days of security - stability - working for one company for a lifetime and not worrying about retirement-medical and all that but there is still money to be made....for now at least.

I believe that : Once a person uses their unemployment time then he/she is no longer counted as unemployed thus the official numbers are cooked just like most of the other numbers in so many fine and oft referred to books and reports produced by TPTB.

Its hard - its gonna get harder for MOST people.

DC is just not MOST people - are you DC?;-)

To be fair, I don't think the kid is talking about job prospects.

But you know, buck up, kiddo. No one can see the future. When you get sucked in to the doom and gloom, just think about this: It was all going to happen at some point. The only thing to consider is whether you would rather have lived at some other time.

How does it all end? Does mankind discover Zero Point Energy and zoom off into the stars to join the Galactic Federation? Do George Bush and Osama bin Laden face of with switchblades in an abandoned warehouse while "Beat It" plays in the background? Does the US of A break apart state by state on a LIFO basis? Does the peak oil cabal fade into history as unbelievably, despite every logical argument that the center cannot hold, everything just limps along indefinitely in a perpatual status-quo?

You are in an enviable position. So turn that frown upside down!

I am an employer.

For every 10 people that come in and fill out an application and then set up an interview only 3-4 ever actually show up for it. Most never even give a return call to explain.

It's kind of amazing after a while.

I am inclined to side with those that say the economy is worse than the official statistics let on AND yet despite this general state of suckiness, it is better NOW than it was in 2001-02 and most likely better than it will be in 2007-?? I think our economy peaked in terms of employment and income levels, even if the raw numbers are higher now, fewer benefit. Personally, the peak of my own earnings occured in 2000. I came close to matching that last year, but not quite.

So its just peachy if you are one of the lucky ones and got snapped up by employers and/or had their tuition picked up by scholarships or mommy and daddy dearest. The rest will struggle to try and service the debt monkey shackled to their future.

And thats without even getting into the worst effects of peak oil.

Tragic graduation indeed. On a side note, I wonder if Kunstler or Al Bartlett ever get invites to speak at those events.

This was my childs high school graduation. A woman who came in through Ellis Island who is 98 yrs old today was part of the graduating class. She attended this school but had to drop out to support her family during the depression, there she sat and recieved her diploma and became the class of O6.
A cosmic cartoon.........so shall be the class of 06.
Economic terror is on the menu, and that is global.
