I agree with a lot of what you say AR. I don't agree in that I think the various books have been used as justification at least as much as admonition. Folks can find a passage that justifies both their knee-jerk as well as considered actions regardless of the question or book.

People like me who are not "spiritual" are no different, not better or worse and we are just as good at justification we just need to look elsewhere. I can bring up the idea of a new religion (or interpretation) because my investment is elsewhere, lol.

What I am saying is the popular passages or at least the current interpretations are not as relevant as they might have been back when they were transcribed. At the time we were much more at the mercy of the natural than we are today. The people doing the writing were persecuted and looking for help.

Today we are not in the same position. "We" are no longer persecuted. And we do have absolute dominion. We have the power to put a quick stop to most life at the press of a button or even worse, run everything into the ground unintentionally.

So my thought is to come up with some new interpretation of the words printed in the red ink.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
-- Abraham Lincoln, Fragment on Government (July 1, 1854)

There's a substantial difference between 'cause of' and 'justification for'. People feel the need to 'justify' just about everything they do. That doesn't imply they would not have done it if they lacked the 'justification'.
Yes we are, as we are,
And so shall we remain,
Until the end.
