$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Paul64', '
')Or consider the cartoon-rock band Gorillaz - a pretty scary and accurate depiction of much of modern youth. Their music (Damon Albarn actually) is actually quite artisitic and creative, compelling in a way but depressingly barren and empty at its core - a reflection of the 'real' world such as it is.

And yet I know young fans of Gorillaz who are creative and interested in the present and the future, and are working toward a future which is anything but barren...maybe the music is what you bring to it....

Considering all the worst that we believe is going to happen architecture isn't that bad a skill. We will need architects to design rammed earth, strawbale houses and the like. We will still need them to tell us where or how to incorporate running water, and thermal heat pipes.

We will still have to have people who can more effectively and efficiently make liveable homes and workplaces. There is an awful lot to learn when designing a dwelling to be solar friendly and incorporate all the new things we will need. so why not.

encourage him. he probably won't go there when he's older but he'll be a hell of a lot more prepared and have knowledge that will be in demand no matter how far he pursues this interest.

Well you know what, life is ugly! Everyones out to get someone and the only thing that people care about is money. We live in a sickening world and those who can see it are labled "depressed or suicidal" and put on meds. But honestly, they can see the truth.

Not being even slightly religious in the popular mainstream sense, I still have to say, "Amen to that."

hmm. How gnostic!

Right now I'll admit I'm confused
On the one hand the world resembles a system of slavery that sets people against each other, and sure enough there's enough people who just don't dream any more, they're not even rebels they just suck in all they've been told they should expect. The vibe is very bad outside your door so you know the fake reality we're supposed to believe isn't even true. We are lied to and there's no debate

But then I think again. I listen to all the latest music, and a great deal of it deals with the above themes and are not at all empty. Like green day, trance in general, moby, even christina aguilera sings about the voice within which is spiritual when u think about it. There are many good things and all the time you see good in people

This makes me feel unsure because I can't oppose the world and not the people in it, there's no hope
I'm thinking perhaps the world is changable. The gnostics said that enslaved humans create the world, the spiritually emancipated can change it. Oh yeah they had a third category, the semi-spiritual but they seemed enslaved as well
This lets you hate the world but love the spiritual world that could exist, and the enslaved good in others, but hate their enslaved form

I was on a walking tour once in Paris and saw where the Statue of Liberty was pieced together. One little tidbit that I recall was that the statue was actually made for the opening of the Suez Canal (as sort of a bridge from Asia to Europe). Well, the Egyptians did not want it, leaving the French gov't to ponder what in the world to do with this behemoth. Well, the rest is history. So, I guess, rather than a gift from the French, it was actually a "regift", which is still a popular form of gift-giving in the US> :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eric_b', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The US public has been transformed into a dumbed-down herd of childish "consumers" who are unable to act in, or even understand, their own interests and are regularly fattened with flattery and manipulative marketing images. All the years of electronic fantasy have left the public unable to comprehend how real power is being exercised in the US.

Any news or information that upsets people is moderated or filtered out....can't disturb the herd with too much reality. Human milk cows respond to stress by making fewer retail purchases and we can't have that.

I completely agree with this. Well said.

I was talking to a friend the other day about just this. It seems each successive
generation is becoming increasingly 'dumbed-down' and infantile. The simpsons generation.

It's gotten harder and harder to have a conversation about anything of substance with
many younger folks. They look at you funny. Much more interest in pop-culture,
religion, including new-age goo, angels and other vacuous stuff like that.

There seems to be a strong anti-intellectual trend, especially in the US.

It's not good, as it seems the latest upcoming generation is going to be ill-equiped to deal
with the huge challenges on the horizon, or even comprehend them in the first place.

More reasons to be a doomer.

Speaking of the Simpsons, I find it deeply ironic that so many Simpsons fans seem to react to the show by slowly adopting the mannerisms of Homer. Just because there are alot of anti-intellectual statements in the show (by the characters) doesn't change the fact that it was written by a crew of Harvard grads who are probably not hoping that their show has the effect of ushering in a generation who imitates Homer Simpson. Some people don't be able to see the actions on screen with a proper level of detachment.

Keep in mind that "news", by definition, is that which is not "normal". Aside from the fact that media presents a distorted picture of reality to begin with, if one's primary source of information about life and the world is the popular press, one will certainly get the impression that the world is filled with rotten people, which is not the case - not YET, at least, tho' media saturation of our lives is leading toward this becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts...

That is a very important point to remember. In fact, a sign that things are getting ugly in a country is that news start getting generally positive. When people's normal life is fairly nice, news are about atrocities. When people's normal life is horrible, news are about nice things.
