Like I've mentioned before, I don't get into philosophical or political conversations with the neighbors, so I don't really know how it would come up. My folks don't accept negativity, so there would be no point in trying to discuss my doomerism with them. These were the people who refused to go to family counseling when I wanted us to try to work through our dysfunctions.

How do you bring up to the neighbors that you expect life as we know it to change drastically? How do you discuss it with them? My husband tried to discuss hard times with the neighbor we share food with, she said "Oh, I don't think that's going to happen." End of discussion.

Incidentally, we have no "cover stories" for what we're doing. The emergency food supply is for emergencies, the guns are for hunting or shooting varmints such as rabid raccoons and wild hogs.

Ludi,

Here is what I am doing. I belong to a small church group, Ethical Humanist really. Pretty progressive people but still not awake and aware.

One night a month I have a free movie "Thursday Night Talkies" Pop, pop corn and conversation.

Tonight I am showing a video of James Hansen.

I will get a handful of devotees from the congregation, 90% don't want to hear it.

I usually get a few walk-ins, some just want to be out of the cold. Some are for real.

I know tonight a small youth group is coming - 5+ escort (chaparone sp?.)

I put it out there, some pick it up. You can't push it, you can lay on the table. For some it may stick and fester and re-emerge later. That is all I can do.

My personal message, to those who will listen is "The world is toast, we can't save it. We CAN try to save ourselves individually and our progeny. That is enough."

You need to be prepared to hear hard things said. Your personality needs Rhino Hide. You need a soft and supportive shoulder to lean on.

My wife and I have no parents, long dead. For that matter we have no relatives (save children) in this country. For my children I simply try to set a good example. Let them watch and learn. Many of the issues that MOS and others speak to are mute to us. In that way we are in a good place, but much older.
