...is paved with old tires.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')ORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A mile offshore from this city's high-rise condos and spring-break bars lie as many as 2 million old tires, strewn across the ocean floor — a white-walled, steel-belted monument to good intentions gone awry.

*sigh*

Where are the the Ph.D scientists who lobbied local, state, and federal agencies to go forward with these programs?

Are they still gazing out the windows of their ivory towers thinking up newer, better ways to save the environment?

In socialism, the intelligentsia never suffer the effects of their decisions. Only the workers, peasants, and soldiers do.

A typical action of our times: grab for a quick fix, instead of rooting out the cause of the problem. Why is there a need for new reefs? What can we do to change our behavior so that they're not being destroyed, and we won't feel the urge to dump more garbage into the ocean, telling ourselves that we're doing good?

We will have to come to the realization that in order for the Earth to fix herself, she mostly has to be left the hell alone. Occasionally a very light touch, by a very knowledgeable hand. No more than that. The outcome of dumping millions of old tires into sensitive areas shouldn't really surprise anyone.

And TJ, don't be silly. 'Intelligentsia' do sometimes suffer under socialism, just as CEOs are sometimes (not nearly often enough) called to task for their actions under financial capitalism. These 'ism's -- capitalism, communism -- are modern concepts. And at this point, both are history, along with most other isms. We will learn to reacquaint ourselves with our life support system. That won't be an ism; that'll be survival. The old paradigms are dead.
Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive...

In the beginning the rules of life were simple: Eat or be eaten.
...it looks like we may have recourse to try these rules out again,
fairly soon.
Coyote, like your sig about Mother Earth holding our collective heads underwater...kind of appropriate.
