The land also gets classified as agriculture so long as the tree's are growing. Others lease to hunting clubs during hunting season.
I think you're talking about the CRP program. It doesn't have anything to do with any forestry dept, it's a USDA program. Call your local NRCS office. You can also lease it to hunters while in the program. Contracts go for 20 years, so if you're thinking slow decline, it might not be available when you need it.
dsula, you indicate a "decent" amount of land. If it's more than you need for your survival needs, you should certainly be able to lease the rest for ag use. At any rate, in the case of an economic system put back to basic sources of real wealth, land will always be able to generate income.
