Sorry to those that witnessed a thread come up in my name.
It seems someone doesn't like 11 year olds knowing about peak oil and tried to discredit me, peakoil.com and this 11 tear old's site all in one foul swoop.

My fault for leaving the PC and not logging off.

Thanks for deleting the thread Aaron

Of course, the generation best equipped for dealing with the changes ahead is the one that hasn't been born yet! :) Young people today may be too spoiled to adapt well, but I'll bet their children or grandchildren will do better.

Wonderful! :-D

But I think this is useful not only for children, many adults have much to learn from this page too!
Peak oil is not an energy crisis. It is a liquid fuel crisis.

Most adults should visit the website.
Regarding the fee for service rather than the appliance buying model. It works ! Ever since I left home , years ago I have relied on coin-op washing machines with the exception of a 2 year period. Guess what, I was doing laundry more frequently. Trying to get quarters in the middle of the night is not fun ... so one end's up planning

What do you think is the best strategy to start explaining some of the trade-offs in making choices about those issues to an adolescent?
I did take a good look into the previous link you posted and some of the hyperllinks are excellent, but if the child is little bit more "advanced" they might require more challenging material than what was available there. Maybe a calculator that makes the consequences of certain choices explicit.
Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Good question!
However, I think most kids up to about 15 will prefer to discuss things qualitatively rather than quantitatively. It would be very easy to go over their heads. I believe the best approach may be by mentoring, rather than tutoring. Above 15, will depend on their abilities to seize holistic concepts.

Therefore, no hard and fast rules.
My intention, assuming some kids start writing in the forum, is not to intervene unless a) somebody asks a direct question, when I'll give him an answer that will point him in the right direction or b) if I see there is a misconception which could lead others in error.
I may appear tough here, at times, with an inability to suffer fools gladly, but you may see me differently if I have to intervene in the Kid's forum :)

Devil the medical profession has one law that you can find in no textbook: everyone is a fool, everyone is a genious, everyone is a teacher, everyone is a student. One may learn from one's mistakes and should learn from others. Call someone a fool if you think so, it will be the best thing that you did for him/her.
So I appreciate your input inspite the toughness of some of your comments :)
I am interested in adolescent learning because education there will have the most immediate payback. In different settings (i.e. sexual education) I have seen some response when quantitiative arguments were used to promote educational programs, so I was wondering . It is tough to beat though the innumeracy caused by credit cards

Maddigan's Quest - kids tv series w/PO message? 1st Ep 26Jan

Unread postby wildilocks » Wed 25 Jan 2006, 12:04:04

Not sure if this is the best place to put this, please move it if there's somewhere better - it's not current events but it is media, and it's fiction but I think might be relevant regarding sustainable living, powerdown, renewables etc .. plus a lovely post apocalyptic premise for doomers :)

I've just been made aware of a potentially quite interesting childrens' fantasy tv series which is a joint UK/NZ production filmed in NZ, Maddigan's Quest - it looks to be one of those quaint low-budget-with-special-effects type dealies, but the premise is interesting... a post apocalyptic world of a couple of centuries hence, set in an amalgamation of Oz/NZ where most of the population has been wiped out due to huge shifting of the worlds' tectonic plates, possibly as the result of global warming.. The beacon of civilization is Solis, a solar-powered city with a library and knowledge saved from the days before the Great Change. As such it seems to be very much a post peak oil civilisation, and thus possibly of interest. The science looks dumbed down and even outright incorrect, but it is a kids' fantasy series so I imagine they want to keep things very simple.

First ep screens on BBC1 tomorrow [Thurs 26th January] at 4.30pm GMT - and I'm sure will be on the torrents shortly after.
I'm looking forward to seeing it, and I hope it is educational regarding energy use and renewables :)

Hmmmm....Global Warming causes Plate tectonics?
Uh...OK, it's a kid's program, I should keep telling myself that...it's a kid's program...it's OK, to misinform kids... (I gotta get out more often)

well, they give other possibilities as well, like the moon being out of alignment, and they say no one really knows why. I think they're trying to simplify the premise but hint at it possibly being humanity's fault that this happened, without going into too much detail. It appears they don't dwell too much on it, even if it is a bad premise, I'm hoping the substance of the show has something useful about the value of energy that kids can pick up on.

old news.

It's a kitcar that they but in a tweaked turbo TDI engine running on biodiesel driving the rear wheels. The front wheels are driven by a 200 hp electric engine power from an ultra capacitor. The diesel engine recharges the capacitor.

It's light, has an insane amount of power and all wheel drive. The fact that it's ungodly fast isn't shocking. It's mileage is most likely coming from it's aerodynamics, diesel engine and lack of weight.

I think it's a great education for the kids, to help them think about energy and transportation. After all, they're the future.

Is soy bean oil efficient to make though? What's its EROEI?
