I own a Honda Pilot, but I don't have much choice, given the size of the family and the winter roads around here. I don't, however, drive it more than about 800 miles a month, so I'm not particularly hard hit.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')ord Vice President for marketing told the Arizona Republic, "May was a watershed month. We are, as an industry, catching up with the breathtaking choices the consumers are now making."

It was only a matter of time before the consumer cut back somewhere. Sounds like they are shocked to find they didn't make the cut. Hard luck. Next play!

OK so Ford spends how much on marketing, analysis and future projections and could not see this coming? People on this website have been predicting the end of the SUV ever since this forum started and Detroit is now just figuring it out. How in the world could we figure this out but these guys and gals spending millions of dollars could not? It can't be stupidity. Probably laziness and inertia.

The cost of company healthcare for pensioners destroyed GM years ago. That's why they can't compete with Japan which has national healthcare system.
We in the US with our free-market zeal destroyed the automotive industry so we wouldn't have to share national health. dumb huh?

I disagree.
Human nature killed U.S. competitiveness.
The U.S. automotive industry began dying when the workers were able to command more than they were worth through the power of their unions.
This his zero to do with a national health care catastrophe plan.
Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

I won't attend the funeral, but if free food is given out at the reception I just might show up for that.

GM is so doomed. Why are they so late in doing this?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')eneral Motors Corp. officially blew up its old business model yesterday, closing four pickup truck and sport utility vehicle factories, announcing a new small car that could get 45 miles per gallon and shedding 8,350 jobs in the process.
The automaker also said it would prepare its Hummer brand for a possible sale. But it remains to be seen whether the automaker can sell enough cars to make money in a shrinking U.S. market and stay ahead of the bill collectors.

GM link
And what company in their right mind would buy the Hummer brand?

Somewhat offtopic but if "national" health care comes to America, it will not be "nationalized" health care -- it will be an epic collusion between gov't and insurance companies to ensure that the for-profit insurance industry can gouge us even more.

The problem with medical insurance in America is the middle-man and there's no way in congress will make that problem goes away. The only sensible way to fund national health care is to ensure it is a not-for-profit system. Otherwise, we'll just have the most massive gov't subsidy of private industry in the history of the universe.
As for the imminent death of the SUV -- I'm dancing on its grave and in no way mourning its demise whatsover.

GM Planning 40 mpg Small Car for 2009
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')M has announced this car less than a year before they hope to begin selling it, with no gradual unveiling of prototypes.

The project doesn’t even have a name yet, and no one has seen the car in any form. All we have so far is a press release.

An act of desperation perhaps?

Actually what happened was the Unions kept demanding more and more from GM in terms of benefits. Have you ever heard the saying "Dont bite the hand that feeds"?
GM's health care woes have less to do with our lack of nationalized healthcare and more to do with Union negotiations.

Cashmere, it's management that commands more than it's worth. No one - no one - is worth 400x more than his workers. No one is worth 200x more than his workers. When I see the financial companies paying their workers absurd salaries, millions upon millions, manipulating compensation practices to GUARANTEE those salaries and golden parachutes, then I vote union. Geez, a salary that allows the purchase of two vehicles, a vacation, and a college fund - and that's supposed to be greedy and horrifying. The thrust of the free market in the US now is to strip workers of everything but the minimum for food and shelter for one person. Working class people who need an operation for a bad back, I suppose, should just realize they don't deserve relief from pain because they aren't rich enough.
The free market doesn't work anymore. As one can see from the efforts to make taxpayers fund it.
