Threadbear, when I was young I didn't read much if any Freud. I don't remember too much about him except that I didn't like him at all. It was a visceral dislike back then. I did read a bunch of Jung. That I liked. Funny how the years can change us.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('k_semler', 'L')ast night I had a strange dream, I think it is strange primarily because of a woman that I never had seen before was in it. In this dream, I pulled into a gas station to buy some burritos and a large pop. The weather was warm, but not too hot, as I was wearing shorts and just a T-shirt, (no protective gear, not even a hat). Anyways, after grabbing my burritos and pop, and having lunch, I decided to go see what they had. So I grabbed my rife out of my car and decided to go check it out. The inside of the gas station was normal, but once I walked around the side of the gas station on the outside, it looked like a convenience store had been set up outside the gas station. I walked up to the first row, and I saw that they had a new flatbed scanner that I was interested in. After looking at that for a while, I walked a few rows back to thier publications section, and I sat on a box, set my gun to my side, and began looking through the books. Once I found a book I was interested in, and picked up my rifle to leave, I was addressed by a good looking lady, (that I have never seen before in real life, or previous dreams), and she asked me when I was going to release the rest of my book. Having no idea what she was talking about, I stupidly asked her, "which book would that be?". She awnsered that the book's name was "Excalibur". I then informed her that I had not published that book. She then inquired about what I have published, and I told her, "I do not have any publications to my name, the most complex thing I have wrote is a couple term papers".. After sounding somewhat disappointed with my awnser, we began to talk about which books we were interested in. I then was walking with her accros the isle to the section with the chairs so we could talk in private, and then I woke up.

The lady in the dream stood about 5'9", had short cut black hair that was curly, she had ear rings on, and she was somewhat tan, but it was obvious that she did not spend much time in the sun. It was bad, (or good), that once I woke up, I was actually disappointed that my fantasy world had dissappeared, as that was the best conversation I ever had with a woman. If only I was that comfortable with women in real life. Any idea what this means?
I debated whether to offer a more detailed commentary rather than justy saying, 'well, obviously Eros is involved.' You asked for ideas about the dream imagery so this is what I think it means: You walk into the place scantily clad with a rifle and no protective gear - not even a hat - you are ready and willing for sex of the first order, i.e. reproductive sex without a condom, sex to make a baby. The pretty girl comes to you and says she wants the book 'Excalibur" That is code, she wants what you have ex caliber, i.e. she wants what comes out of your rifle. She wants to have your baby. The two of you do some negotiating and are then on your way to someplace where you can consumate the deal when, unfortunately, you wake up.

Of course, K_semler, dream symbolism is often rich in multiple meanings and nuance. This is, without a doubt, part of the true fascination of dreams. Excalibur could very well have been used by your mind in the sense of ex caliber as I suggested which implies an erotic interpretation of the rifle. This is what came to me first this morning, and then I had to go to work all day. Of course, Excalibur is King Arthur's sword. This also lends itself to an erotic theme. There were other interesting symbols in this dream, for instance the 'flatbed scanner' is a word symbol: scan her on a flat bed. If this isn't an erotic dream then I'll eat my hat!

Some may think that K_semler's dream was a put-on, bait for the dream interpreter. I thought of that but after looking his post over carefully decided that it was a true post of a transparent dream. Perhaps K_semler will set the record straight. As for credentials to interpret dreams this is all I have to say: "Credentials? We don't need no stinkin' credentials!'

Two years ago at this time I was reading Art History and criticism. I read a book which had a great deal of psychoanalytic talk in it. I was fascinated but I just didn't know enough about the subject so I moved away from Art into Psychology. This led me to Freud. I began to read his works and became more and more interested. In my obsessive maniac style I started to read every goddam book he ever wrote. I took them with me to work since as a Substitute Teacher I rarely have much to do beyond taking roll. One day I was subbing for a High School Biology class. I took the roll and handed out their work for the day. Then I took out my latest Freud book and started reading. Up comes this charming freckle faced teenaged girl who wants to know, 'whatcha readin'? We had a conversation going when another less intelligent girl came up to join us. This second girl told a dream of her's and wanted an interpretation: she's dressed as a pilgrim and is being chased by Indians who are shooting arrows at her. One of the arrows sticks her and she wants to know what the dream means. What would you do? I drove home blue that day thinking about the bright girl with the freckles.

8O Holy shit! I never thought it went so far for dreams! About the only thing I thougt if meant was that I should talk to women more, and mabye write a book. And no, that dream I described was not BS, I'm now wondering why the hell I had it considering that I do not wish to have offspring. So now my next question is, why a gas station with a convenence store on the outside of it? Thank god the last 2 nights have been dream-free. :)

Isn't the convenience store in The Simpsons called 'Quicky Mart'? Convenience Stores are where you get what you want conveniently. The question I have is whether this interpretation of your dream rings true to you or not. MikeB says that dream interpretation is an arbitrary parlour game. There is no place to go for the truth about this. We have only ourselves to rely on. There are no authorities or experts to tell us the truth. We are on our own. The arbitrary parlour game argument boils down to despair at the possibility of ever knowing anything real about our dreams. Sort of a spiritual nihilism which I don't accept.

An interesting question, k. Lets suppose that the interpretation I offered is in fact correct. This would mean that your conscious ideas about having offspring are not in harmony with your subconscious wishes. This is a fundamental aspect of Freudian thought: much of our own minds is beyond our reach yet there it is. The project is to bring it to conscious awareness. We can't change the subconscious but we can alter our conscious thinking in order to integrate ourselves and alleviate the self-alienation caused by conflict between the different parts of our own psyches. Learning to understand what our dreams tell us is to have an internal dialogue - a communication between the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. For this reason, dreams ought to be welcome, bringing us tidings from the inaccessible realm inside our own heads.

well of course he wants to bonk her, but the point is that the imagery suggests that he wants to procreatively bonk her.

I respect the folks in the white lab coats who do the empirical reductionistic molecular science. They are the ones who discovered DNA. In a sense we are all puppets and DNA is the puppet master. DNA tells us to do more than 'bonk', it tells us to reproduce. That is the deeper meaning of the dream.

:? but I thought that if I repeated a mantra enough, that it would become imbedded into my subconcious as a "true" and natural position? I guess I was wrong on that aspect. Now I am wondering why my subconsious desires are in contradiction with my subconsious desires. It seems that I have perfected doublethink if that is indeed the case. And the problem I have with dreams is just that, they are dreams, and have little or no relfection on reality from what I have experienced. If the dreams would in fact be reality, then I would love them.

Well, either dreams are bringing us knowledge of our subconscious landscape or they aren't. If you think they aren't then off you go on your merry way and forget about it because then they don't mean anything at all. Have a nice day! :-D

Anybody agree with me about meaning in dreams or am I all alone on this? Maybe some of you folks who have read this see it as ego-tripping on my part and don't want to contribute for that reason. Well is it ego-tripping if you feel strongly about something like this and want to engage other people? Think of it as a crusade for meaning in dreams against the infidels who see no meaning whatsoever in dreams. My guess is that people who see no meaning in dreams see no meaning in life either. As for me, I BELIEVE and I want to spread the good news: your dreams have meaning, learn to understand them and you will be glad you did!

Madpaddy, what's it like to get drunk under an Irish Sky? Does it smile back at you? Why were so many of those early mystics Irish? Tell us the secret of Ireland that your relations have disavowed.

An obvious lapse of judgement for some obvious and some not-so-obvious reasons . .
