$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lighthouse', 'a')s long they don't shoot ...

No! It's actually quite scary. If they had no expectation of shooting the protesters they wouldn't be pointing the guns at them. They were ready to shoot down suspected 'terrorists' that may try to assassinate the Prez. It would be the protesters word against theirs' if they actually shot someone. And I wouldn't trust their judgement. Gunmen can easily be too triggerhappy.

Anyone ever see that movie "First Family" where Bob Newhart is the President and he uses a mannequin in motorcades that waves at people? As I recall the gag in the movie had someone throw a tomato and knock the mannequin's head off.

Leftists wet their pants when Bush's security detail rolls past with guns visible. And they wonder why no one takes them seriously. They need to grow up.

 Seriously though, in NYC at least we're used to seeing the military with very big automatic weapons in the subways, streets, airports, etc but if they were ever randomly pointing rifles at pedestrians or protesters do you really think any normal adult wouldn't flinch? But unless you're stupid, you shouldn't move an inch if under direct target like that.

It's called "freedom and democracy", apparently. Obviously, the big carrot of freedom requires a big stick to police it..

And you think the US cares what they want? Want has nothing to do with it; they will accept it, or they will perish.

I don't think that particular possibility enters into the decision matrix of any of the serious office holders in the US, rightly or wrongly. Their objective has been to craft a world where if they go down, everyone goes down.

Only if they are truely baaa-rking. We do have an armed-offenders squad for the occasional idiot. The "organised crime" down here is globally rated as the most disorganised.

I'm jealous, rog. But I've got to ask you, if everything is so hunky-dory down there, in your out of the way corner of the world, why do you spend so much time and emotion fretting about us poor slobs in the thick of things?

Being aware of the global situation is important, and certain countries are going to react differently and probably violently. I believe that little ol'NZ will be one of the first to have it's airlines curtailed and it's domestic fuel cut off, and unfortunately, we're still not making the right decisions down here, (witness the cancellation of Wellington to Auckland passenger trains!).
But if this is all about bread and circuses, from down here it's one hell of a show....

yeah, I read about that at Kunstler's blog today. I guess the Kiwis aren't up to speed on this either. It's going to mess with all of us.

Goodbye Civil Rights

Unread postby KhanCEO » Tue 02 Jan 2007, 22:49:42

The Private Arm of the Law-Washington Post
What? You have civil rights? Private "special police" dont have to follow the same rules as police officers. This feels like the the legal torture thing. Private contractors wern't put in prison for torturing people because no rules exist for them. Same thing in Iraq.
I can see it now: "Sir, only police officers have to follow the constitution, we are a private security firm; you have no rights with us."

I think that private security forces being able to circumvent the law might be a good thing if used. You could have your commune all sign up to be guards of a "private security firm" that you create. In reality it would just be setup for self defense.

Anyone who tries to loot your commune is shot dead, and then you could hide behind "well, we're a private security firm". This way your husband/wife wouldn't go to jail for shooting up a stranger who tries to rape/rob/murder you. Always look how you can use these things to your advantage.

Private forces are to protect TPTB's interest. You don't really think they'll give these powers to the common man forming their own company.
