It's just hilarious! Did you watch to the end, showing them driving those jalopies with no body panels? Apparently that's a typical Gypsy vehicle in eastern Europe, and the Gypsies have become much worse off over the last say 10 years.

Probably much worse for anyone not following the "conform, consume, obey" mantra these days.

Yep, watched it to the end. It's an extract from a longer documentary, apparently. They strip vehicles down for maximum load-carrying capacity and have a sort of mini pickup. The ones you see there, they're not too badly off, Europe contains worse poverty.

The 2nd guy in the beginning, when they're talking, you notice the vest he's wearing? It looks actually home spun, like something out of an old Brueghel drawing.

Yes, I have seen newspaper photos of villagers crowding in communal eating areas in countries like Bulgaria and Romania; the people, the clothes and the buildings don't look too different to archive photos of 1917 and all that. In the back woods of EU expansion, you have places that have not changed in a century, just adapted some higher tech thrown their way. It is sad, but the ones who hope for something better end up begging in the streets of Paris and London.

Hm, there's some of that in the US too - not as many people yet so it's still out of sight.

I still think it's hilarious that there's a song about these vehicles in the video..... great stuff!

That was almost surreal, I liked the guy in the dalmations shirt saying he's not sure where he has to go right now but he's sure he could trade his "car" for a new sumthin or other.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mmasters', 'A')nd another:

** yeah, don't you love the way they make the actor stumble on his words when he's trying to rebut the reasons why it's unhealthy. AND they have the gall to say that it's "natural" because it's from Corn.
AND it's "good" if used in moderation. Where is it used in moderation in our food aisles? Everything is PACKED with it, you have to really limit your purchases in order to buy something without corn syrups as additives in addition to other sugars in the product.

I end up making my own jams, jellies, with fruit syrups or minimal sugar at best.
Don't think Splenda or any artificial sweeteners are better.

Use Stevia if you have problems with sugar, another thing is Agave Nectar as a sweetener. Both are no to low glycemic.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')HFCS has the exact same sweetness and taste as an equal amount of sucrose from cane or beet sugar but it is obviously much more complicated to make, involving vats of murky fermenting liquid, fungus and chemical tweaking, all of which take place in one of 16 chemical plants located in the Corn Belt. Yet in spite of all the special enzymes required, HFCS is actually cheaper than sugar. It is also very easy to transport--it's just piped into tanker trucks. This translates into lower costs and higher profits for food producers.

The development of the HFCS process came at an opportune time for corn growers. Refinements of the partial hydrogenation process had made it possible to get better shortenings and margarines out of soybeans than corn. HFCS took up the slack as demand for corn oil margarine declined. Lysine, an amino acid, can be produced from the corn residue after the glucose is removed. This is the modus operandi of the food conglomerates--break down commodities into their basic components and then put them back together again as processed food.

Today HFCS is used to sweeten jams, condiments like ketchup, and soft drinks. It is also a favorite ingredient in many so-called health foods. Four companies control 85 percent of the $2.6 billion business--Archer Daniels Midland, Cargill, Staley Manufacturing Co. and CPC International. In the mid-1990s, ADM was the object of an FBI probe into price fixing of three products--HFCS, citric acid and lysine--and consumers got a glimpse of the murky world of corporate manipulation.
Lots more here
Blatant deception in advertising. They're getting desperate because people are finding stuff out and avoiding foods with the ingredient. I've seen quite a few mainstream items at the grocer with packages saying stuff like, "Now, with no HFCS!"

I'm growing stevia. Anybody know what to do with it? I suppose dry the leaves and powder it.

That stuff makes my stomach bloat and gurgle. And it fucks up the taste of Coca-Cola so I quit drinking it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mercurygirl', 'H')ave you tried Mexican Coca-Cola?

No. Is it the original? I know they still make Coca-Cola using sugar in Venezuela. And I heard you can get a some sort of sugar Cola online but I don't feel like working that hard for it.

I swear... no self-respecting G.I. of the 1940's would finish fighting WWII of he were to taste the HF crap we call Coke today.

Seems kind of sacrilegious to use corn syrup in it.

I saw an ad on a carton of Coca-Cola saying that it was good for you because it was "hydrating."

This is they best they could come up with :lol:
Like tobacco, it's all natural and fine in moderation! Yeah right!
Their add is an insult to educated people and judging by the
comments in youtube, I think it isn't fooling too many people.

This reminds me of the SHARDS O GLASS FREEZE POPS commercial.

Chevy ads on peakoil.com

Unread postby Art_Vandelai » Mon 16 Mar 2009, 17:10:59

Very interesting to see Chevrolet advertising its "Traverse" on peakoil.com forums.

Do they really believe that a bunch of people concerned about oil depletion are part of the target market for such a vehicle?
