Televison: "We Were Warned"

Unread postby Leanan » Sat 18 Mar 2006, 00:09:20

I thought it wasn't supposed to be on until tomorrow night, but it looks like they're running it tonight, as part of "Anderson Cooper 360."

No need to watch clips. It's on TV right now!!

They are showing it a day early for some reason.

Pretty good so far. He's covering everything. Tar sands, deepwater, Chinese consumption...

Heh, I watched the segment on their site with matt simmons, and it was preceeded by an ad for a BMW convertible that "hauls ass."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leanan', 'N')o need to watch clips. It's on TV right now!!

Yes for you, I only get CNN international, and unless PO is somehow connected to MRI-polygraphs, it's not showing here... :(
I hope they don't want to "protect" us from PO-awareness and will air it later on...

What I got from the trailers though looked very promising, almost like doomer porn. Could this be the second milestone in mainstream PO-awareness, after the NYT article?

Someone said it's airing on CNN International at these times:

Saturday: 12:00 GMT 22:00 GMT
Sunday: 13:00 GMT 17:00 GMT

I guess you have to add or subtract to get your local time. I guess that means it airs tomorrow morning U.S. time?

Man! I only caught the last ten minutes. It must have started at 9pm central. I guess I'll have to catch it in its entirety tomorrow night.

Over now, at least in my time zone. (I don't know if CNN runs the same schedule in every time zone. FWIW, they ran "We Were Warned" as the second hour of "Anderson Cooper 360.")

I thought it was pretty good. It was kind of neat to see things like the Canadian tar sands and the cane fields of Brazil.

Pretty good intro to peak oil. Better than anything else I've seen. If CNN put this on DVD, I would buy it.

Thanks, I am looking forward to it!

Sounds pretty neat so far, but what was their general conclusion in the end?
More like the usual "some people say this and others say this" or more like "if we don't start acting now we are in serious trouble?"

The conclusion is that we're screwed.

It ends with the conclusion to the oil crisis scenario. No happy ending. The president of the U.S. signs a bill that enforces conservation and throws billions at alternate energy. There are shortages of heating oil, and no gas to be had. World leaders are in a panic about the global recession. There are shots of empty airports and deserted highways; Americans are staying home for Thanksgiving this year.

The last shot shows a gas pump with an "out" sign on it. The last line is something like, "All the things we hold dear are threatened. And we were warned."

Sort of an open ending, I guess you'd call it.

Good. I can only hope that some take it seriously. IF we don't act we are doomed.

You mean it didn't end with "and then Jesus rode to our rescue in a hydrogen powered car!!! and all was well!!!" ?

Amazing.

I guess this means the shit is about to hit the fan.

Best,

Matt

Thanks, Leanan, for telling us:

according to http://edition.cnn.com/CNNI/ over here in Europe it will indeed be on tonight, 11 PM (23.00 CET).

The word is spreading.
Looking forward to seeing it.

I don't know if this is related to CNN's WWW (We Were Warned) show, but at about 2006 March 18 0745 EST, CNN showed a segment showing how Brazil achieved energy independence. According to the segment, Brazil gets 40% of its fuel from ethanol, and Brazilian cars have switches that can change between gasoline and ethanol. The segment showed seemingly infinite stretches of sugar cane fields.

However, ethanol is probably not going to be a fuel of our future, since it has a low energy profit ratio. According to "Beyond Oil" (the 1986 book by Gever et al, not the Deffeyes book), ethanol and its variations have a ratio between 0.7 and 1.8. This means that for every unit of energy put into ethanol, between 0.7 and 1.8 unit comes out - not very profitable. Many experts say that ethanol will not be the solution to peak oil, including the authors of "Beyond Oil". So why is Brazil profiting handsomely from it? Is it because far fewer people drive in Brazil than in other places (although the segment showed traffic jams in Brazil's cities)? They do seem to be operating efficiently; for example, the energy to run an ethanol production plant comes from burning the chaff of sugar cane plants.

So does Brazil have the answer?
