Talkin' Finances with Ma and Pa

Unread postby thuja » Tue 28 Feb 2006, 17:51:33

I am guessing that many of us still have living parents and that for many of us, these parents haven't bought in to the whole PO thing. They may agree with bits and pieces ("Yup, gas prices sure have gone up!") but not see, or want to see, the whole picture. For many of us, these same parents are sitting on a mountain of home equity, stocks, bonds and money markets that could go up in smoke if inflation and a major recession hits.

In my case, I have tried to warn them and offered some helpful tips on protecting some of their assets but I am guessing I am going to watch that accumulated wealth go bye-bye. To me, that's a darn shame, because they may have to deal with a serious blow that could leave them financially ruined. I also am saddened because that money really could go for a good purpose in the here and now. Money could be allocated towards commodities, arable land, a woodlot, precious metals, etc. etc. I am wondering if anyone else out there has had the same thoughts, or may disagree with me entirely.

Tell them to set aside the sums required for the funerals they wish for. Don't prepay because who ever you pay may go under (literally). They could even buy the plot and caskets they want if they wish to be buried.

That might wake them up.

I've been telling mine basically that for quite a while (What you were saying Thuja) - commodities, land, metals, etc... I told them to get out of the stock market in early 2000- They told me I was being a pessimist - they lost thier shorts. I told them to buy gold in early 2001 - they didn't. They could have made 150% on investment. I have tried to warn them still - And they just call me pessimist - the whole "you don't understand because we had it bad in the 70's too and it all got better didn't it so it will again right, we'll just use ethanol etc..."

They will live long enough to see the future their grandkids will have... small satisfaction for me.

Best thing you can do is take the time to PROVE to them PO is a reality...leave no stone unturned.

A wise man once told me : "Listen to you? Heck, your parents used to change your diapers...that is what they still think...why Should they listen to you?"

While my folks are very PO aware, in other matters, the Wise man had his say....

And worst comes to worst, maybe YOU should set aside a small amount of prepes for Ma and Pa...should they ever need you.

Got fond memories of being whipped with a switch that SHED?

A "guest" bedroom with private bath would be on my list....Honor thy mother and father...and hope to heck the next generation honors our Alzhiemers Azzes when we age.

I get the distinct feeling that PO will be a rather large chunk of humble pie and an awakening for many people.

Unfortunately, it'll all be forgotten in a few hundred years...

Yup- mom and pop and wife's mom and pop can all move in with me if needs be down the road. Hope it doesn't come to that but that was common fare back in the 19th century and prior. No elderly facilitated care facilities (except for the uber rich), just the kid's house. They're may be side benefits with that arrangement- grandparents for day care, cleaning up around the house, cooking dinners...the down side would be the close quarters, the grief, anger and recriminations, etc, etc.

Nah, nothing like that.. I built this shed... Heated and everything. Well they could probably stay in the living room but I have no spare bedrooms or private bath. Its a small house, no offices or anything like that...

I've given up on talking to my parents about economics/investing. The only thing that I've accomplished was to thoroughly convince my parents that I'm a "loose nut".

In all honesty I don't blame them. I mean if you've spent the last 65++ years of your life living in a world of exponential growth and all of a sudden some "punk kid" comes along and tells YOU that the world as you know it will soon no longer exist (a world in which in general life perpetually gets better) how would YOU react?

*yeah exactly*

My parents probably have 10 years left on this planet before they die of old age. So with that said what difference does it make what they believe?...it will only be good for 10 years anyways. And besides what good will come out of filling their minds with all this doom and gloom, even if it is true. What good can come from convincing an old person that their grandkids will live in a world that is going downhill?
