What is going on here. I can stop it for about 5-10 seconds at a time.

Optical illusion. It does seem to go on moving from the point it stopped, but if you actually look at where exactly the hand was pointing when you start looking away, you will realise that it has moved (even though it looked like it didn't).

I guess it has something to do with the brain's ability to fill in the gaps. Our brains give us a picture of a very stable reality, even though our eyes are moving all the time.

FYI, if you do acid your brain seems to lose some of this ability to fill in the gaps... causing the most strange impressions.

I don't think you can stop time, but if you drink a lot of hard liquor, you can speed it up, and then the day after, watch as time crawls verry slow.

You can't stop time but you can speed yourself up and make time appear to stop for you. The Astronauts who went to the moon are actually a few seconds younger then they would be if they stayed on earth. If there was a spaceship that could go the speed of light an astronaut could travel across the galaxcy in a journy that would take millions of years but to the astronaut on the ship it would have only seemed a few seconds. The passage of time stands still at the speed of light.
