Solution to high car payments.....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')urdened by debt and driving home from a night of gambling in West Virginia, Sergio Lopez launched a scheme that at the time must have seemed like a good idea.

He pulled his Volkswagen Jetta up to a random corner in Silver Spring, doused the interior with gasoline, set it on fire and walked away. He later made a claim to Nationwide Insurance. The car was missing, he said -- someone must have stolen it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Investigators estimate that hundreds of such crimes occurred in the Washington area in the past two years, although the exact number is unclear, and experts predict the number will increase because of the worsening economy. Many offenders have fallen behind on payments to car dealerships. This year, more people are behind on such loans than in nearly two decades.

In compliance with the Code of Conduct, far be it from me to condone or promote any illegal activities....

also, since most of the PO.com viewers have already made their preparations and drive paid off POS cars that they would never torch, because they are getting good transportation value out of them....

and i would never do such a thing myself, because I am honest, fall into the category of the paid for POS car myself, and don't have any financing outside of a mortgage....

but....

have any of you considered this as an alternative to those pesky car payments?

I can neither confirm nor deny considering this.

Oh yeah...

Well,

As a lawyer I can say its not unheard of that a car gets "washed away" on a low water bridge during a storm or driven into a lake or a river by "joy riders" or during unfortunate accident on a camping trip etc.

Same here. 4 POS cars all paid for. My daily driver is a 92 camry with 180k miles. Had to have it towed out of the driveway a few weeks ago. Fixed it and keep on truckin. Drver window stuck, sunroof leaks on my head, But I love that car. The van I have is so quircky the wife won't drive it. Thats OK with me :)

Nothing new. For 4 years I was a total loss adjuster for Metlife.

Want to know what the most "stolen" or "missing" car was for 2002-2004? Nope, not the Accord or Camry.

The Mitsubishi Galant.

Remember a few years ago when Mitsubishi had Zero down/zero payments/ Zero interest. Well lots of lower middle class bought one of these cars at full sticker. Usually they were upside down to begin with. So after a year of hard driving these folks brought the car to trade in and they would be offered 12K on a $26K note. Of course after a year of no payments the principle stayed the same as the day they drove off the lot.

Then came the claims. Many tried pushing this into the lake or setting it on fire.

The silver bullet in weeding out insurance fraud. "I'd be happy to process your claim, may I have keys to the vehicle". Then the car would show up half the time. The others ended up in a farm pond or on fire.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
