Solar Electricity Tax

Talk about corporate interests! Sure, if the utilities buy the excess electricity generated by a consumer at current rates, then they loose out because they don't gain the profit associated with that kwh of electricity. But purposefully taxing it, especially at 40%, seems like overkill... It's almost like they want to make money on the electricity private parties contribute to the grid! 8O

I'm surprised they also aren't trying to tax solar electricity generated and used by the private party in question.... But than again, a watched pot never boils. I suppose it'll happen some time around a proposed air tax. :-D

Well one time in England they had a tax on windows! Even today you can see a number of old houses that have had some of their windows bricked up to avoid the extra tax.

Although in fairness, I must say that if I as an individual set up a business and sold things then I would be expected to be taxed on the sales I made. So if I sold electricity then I would also expect to be taxed.

Maybe the problem of what rate to pay is why the company I buy my electricity from charges me two different amounts 1) the actual electricity used, and 2) the cost for distributing that electricity. I guess if I installed solar panels and sold the surplus I would be lucky to get an amount equal to what I pay under 1).
We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice.

I suppose a fair situation would be to acount for distribution charges and tax the private party providing the electricity. But according to a bill I have here, transmission accounts for 7/10th of a cent per kwh, compared to generation at over ten cents. And taxes are much less, something like 1/5th of a cent. So taking something less than 10% should account for taxation/transmission, and if the going rate is something like ten cents per kwh, then the owner should be paid nine cents per kwh. But 40% is just greedy!

In any event, the article is dated Wednesday, March 19, 2003. So... maybe it's a moot point?
