Simon Singh: A hero for free speech.

Some of you may have heard about the UKs insane libel laws. They are massively weighted towards the plaintive and the defendent has to actually prove they have not libelled the plaintive. Moreover they are rediculously expensive to defend even if you win. It is a charter for the wealthy to simply threaten a suit and most parties have to back down. There are also so called super injunctions where the plaintive can force the defended to not even be able to publically state they are being sued.
Its insane and so bad that libel tourism is now rife, where people from all round the world come to the UK to claim that as something was written on the internet and could be read in the UK Uk law applies.

Simon Singh is a well known science author here in the UK, he also write a column for the Guardian newspaper on science. (Check out Ben Goldacres science columns in the Guardian regularly, great stuff and their weekly science podcast is often very entertaining stuff.... Im not a fan of podcasts but this one is normally compulsary listening.)

A year or so ago Simon wrote a piece on chiropracters

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')ou might think that modern chiropractors restrict themselves to treating back problems, but in fact they still possess some quite wacky ideas. The fundamentalists argue that they can cure anything. And even the more moderate chiropractors have ideas above their station. The British Chiropractic Association claims that their members can help treat children with colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying, even though there is not a jot of evidence. This organisation is the respectable face of the chiropractic profession and yet it happily promotes bogus treatments
Chiropractors sued Simon for libel and expected him and the Guaridan to back down. Simon stood his ground but fate delt him a cruel blow. He got the biggest C**t in the UK legal system. Judge Eady, basicaly he was destined to lose.

But Simon dug in and gave up a huge amount of his personal income and eventualy even his paying Guardian column to find the money and time to fight this case. And he raised a stink. But as a person with a bit of a media profile (very popular couple of science books) and lots of connections to the media his case raised a stink.

Eventualy the chiropractors backed down and have dropped the case but also now all three main UK parties have included reform of the libel system in their election manifestos and this included in all three a public interest defence i.e. that if a story is in the public interest then the defendent can comit libel..... basically the way it works in most democracies.

So every lover of free speech here on peak oil dot com, can I invite you all to raise a glass and cheer this hero who stood his ground and has proven that liberty can still march forward if people are prepaired to take risks.
