Should I deny peak oil theory?

Unread postby knoppix2004 » Tue 13 Sep 2005, 14:47:03

As many of you know I work in a stock market. Well, that means we believe in exponential growth, and unlimited supply of energy, and capitalists’ G-D is technology.

Now here is my dilemma. I was looking at some posting on peakoil.com two days ago. One of my fellow stock brokers came to my desk and saw what I was reading… He said “You don’t believe these intellectuals molester – do you?” He looked at me that the same way we stock brokers look at those people who buy stocks from us which are about to go down…

I felt ashamed, and I said “Fuck NO!” Somebody was using my computer…. I don’t even know what this shit is” (sorry about profanity)…

Peak Oil is not illegal or ban subject in business community, but we are oblige to keep up with this…

Honestly, I don’t believe in Peak Oil theory too, but I don’t deny it either… I wanna be with my fellow workers, with the herds. But, I don’t think it’s fair the way the way we are “subject” to deny certain things… What’s sad is that all of us in stock market are die hard Bush supporter… Do you all go through this?

Does it make me a hypocrite? Does it make me a coward?

Who knows, but it does seem to make you one of the herd. Keep a sharp eye and ear; the herd is grazing now, but some of the sheeple are perking up and a predator (peal oil) is prowling in the grass at the perimeter.

No sense in starting a panic.

I still bounce my head off the wall for not buying futures last year though.

If you allow peer pressure to stampede your beliefs as a grown-up, in my books it makes you a coward.

Don't feel bad necessarily, it puts you in the majority. Most of the States is operating at about a Grade 5 level right now, and my own country not so far ahead either.

I don't think it's fair to judge him as a coward, only because he doesn't stand up to stupid people. Why should he? From the sound of it they wouldn't recognize peak oil if it bites them in the ass.

Why should he risk a confrontation which could have only bad consequences for him in his daily life over something which is important to him at the moment but not others?

Maybe it's my avoidant personality, but I never risk conflicts with some dumbo sheep if it's not really really important and can't be avoided. They are not worth it.

He was only smart.

There is nothing cowardly about keeping your opinions to yourself. People in the workplace need to respect you. You know what kind of people they are, so it's your call. I'm not saying it's right to lie, but Peak Oil is probably not a work-related topic, so I say keep it to yourself.

Certain individuals at work know how closely I follow the energy situation and they give me all kinds of trouble about it. Before you open your big mouth because you think they are intelligent enough to understand the situation, remember that you have to deal with this person 5 days a week.

The very fact that we use oil (and any other resource really) is proof enough that depletion is happening. So peak oil is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

Feel free to believe whatever you want, but remember to do your research. Blind obedience is dangerous.

Makes you a f--king moron. But I'd say you're not and you obviously can think for yourself since you're here.
